First Three situations: USED TO: Anytime you want to say “used to” you use the imperfect. Was + (verb) + ING: was/were doing something, you use the imperfect. Habitual actions: Things you did repeatedly in the past, you must use the imperfect even if it doesn’t translate correctly in english.

I was playing soccer when you called me. Let’s try a few: I was playing soccer when you called me. I used to play soccer when i was young (joven) I always (siempre) walked when I was young.

I was playing soccer when you called me. Let’s try a few: I was playing soccer when you called me. Yo jugaba el fútbol cuando me llamaste. I used to play soccer when i was young (joven) Yo jugaba fútbol cuando yo era joven. 3) I always (siempre) walked when I was young. yo siempre caminaba cuando yo era joven.

Key words for the imperfect tense (to indicate habitual actions) WHEN YOU SEE THESE, YOU MUST USE THE IMPERFECT!!! generalmente; por lo general generally a menudo often muchas veces; a veces sometimes; many times de vez en cuando from time to time todos los dias (meses/anos) every day (month/year/tuesday etc) nunca never siempre always con frecuencia; frecuentemente frequently cada mes (dia, ano, martes, miercoles ete) every month (day/year/tuesday etc)

Practice: Now write 5 sentences in the imperfect tense about what you used to do “cuando era joven” using the keywords.
