Complementos Directos (Direct Objects)

What does a direct object pronoun do? A direct object pronoun takes the place of a direct object. Do you see the truck? direct object Yes, I see it. direct object pronoun

Do they want the hamburgers? direct object Yes, they want them. direct object pronoun

The following are the direct object pronouns in English: The Spanish equivalents are as follows: me = me us = nos you (fam.) = te you (pl.) = los, las you (form.) = lo, la him, it(m.) = lo them (m.) = los her, it(f.) = la them (f.) = las

I see it. verb direct object pronoun Yo lo veo. direct object pronoun verb In English the direct object pronoun is placed after the verb. In Spanish it is usually put before the conjugated verb.

We watch you. Nosotros te miramos. verb direct object pronoun Nosotros te miramos. direct object pronoun verb In Spanish, the direct object pronoun is usually put before the conjugated verb.

She sings them (las canciones). direct object pronoun verb Ella las canta. direct object pronoun verb In Spanish, the direct object pronoun is usually put before the conjugated verb.

Él las escribe. Él no las escribe. Notice the placement of the direct object pronouns in a negative sentence in Spanish: Él las escribe. Él no las escribe. direct object pronoun verb In a negative sentence in Spanish the direct object pronoun is placed in front of the conjugated verb. It can not be placed in front of “no”:  negation (no) + dir.obj. pronoun + verb

Los estudiantes la hacen. Notice the placement of the direct object pronouns in a negative sentence in Spanish: Los estudiantes la hacen. Los estudiantes no la hacen. direct object pronoun verb In a negative sentence in Spanish the direct object pronoun is placed in front of the conjugated verb.  negation (no) + dir.obj. pronoun + verb

Yo veo la casa. Yo la veo. I see it. Rewrite the following sentence replacing the direct object with the direct object pronoun. Then translate the sentence into English. Yo veo la casa. Yo la veo. I see it.

Leemos los libros. Los leemos. We read them.

Ellos buscan a nosotros. Ellos nos buscan.

Tú necesitas las piñas. Tú las necesitas.

Ella necesita el plátano. Ella lo necesita.

Yo tengo el melocotón. Yo lo tengo.

¿Compran las langostas en la pescadería? ¿Las compran en la pescadería?

Yo veo a las chicas. Las veo.

¿Compran ellos cerezas en el mercado? ¿Las compran en el mercado?

¿Cocinas la carne? No, I don’t cook it. No, no la cocino.

¿Quieres comprar los mariscos? No, I don’t want to buy them. No, no los quiero comprar.

¿Quieres comprar el cangrejo ahora? Notice the placement of the direct object pronouns in a sentence with an infinitive construction in Spanish: ¿Quieres comprar el cangrejo ahora? Sí, lo quiero comprar ahora. Sí, quiero comprarlo ahora. The direct object pronoun can be placed either before a conjugated verb or attached to the infinitive.

¿Vas a cocinar la papa? Sí, la voy a cocinar. Sí, voy a cocinarla. Notice the placement of the direct object pronouns in a sentence with an infinitive construction in Spanish: ¿Vas a cocinar la papa? Sí, la voy a cocinar. Sí, voy a cocinarla. The direct object pronoun can be placed either before a conjugated verb or attached to the infinitive.

¿Van a cantar las canciones? Notice the placement of the direct object pronouns in a sentence with an infinitive construction in Spanish: ¿Van a cantar las canciones? No, no las vamos a cantar. No, no vamos a cantarlas. The direct object pronoun can be placed either before a conjugated verb or attached to the infinitive. The negation still goes before the pronoun.

¿Estamos comiendo la comida? Notice the placement of the direct object pronouns in a sentence with a present progressive construction in Spanish: ¿Estamos comiendo la comida? Sí, la estamos comiendo. Sí, estamos comiéndola. The direct object pronoun can be placed either before a conjugated verb or attached to the gerundio.

¿Estás leyendo el libro? Notice the placement of the direct object pronouns in a sentence with a present progressive construction in Spanish: ¿Estás leyendo el libro? Sí, lo estoy leyendo. Sí, estoy leyéndolo. The direct object pronoun can be placed either before a conjugated verb or attached to the gerundio.
