Preterite Endings for Regular -ARVerbs The preterite tense in Spanish tells what happened or what you did. It is used when the action described has already been completed. When conjugating the regular preterite tense of an –AR verb, take off the –AR and add the following endings.

Preterite -AR Verb Endings -AR Verbs Yo Nosotros Tú Vosotros Él Ella Ud. Ellos Ellas Uds. - é - amos - asteis - aste - ó - aron

Compare Present and Past -AR Endings Hablar – to talk (Hablar + ending) Yo hablo Nosotros hablamos Tú hablas Vosotros habláis Él Ella habla Ud. Ellos Ellas hablan Uds. Present Preterite Yo hablé Nosotros hablamos Tú hablaste Vosotros hablasteis Él Ella habló Ud. Ellos Ellas hablaron Uds.

Algo para pensar…Something to thing about…. *Notice the accent marks on the endings: “yo” form… é “él, ella, Ud form….ó Use the term “YOSHE” as a way to remember that the “yo” and “she” forms have accents! *Notice the “Nosotros” form is the same in the present tense and preterite tense. You will need to use context clues to help tell which tense is intended.
