Stem-Changing Verbs With Tommy the Tomate

Do you remember? When we learned about regular verb conjugation we learned that a verb has TWO parts… What are the two parts?

The Stem The Ending & Habl- -ar

What’s the deal with “stem changing verbs”? Stem-Changing Verbs are verbs that have a stem change. There are three kinds in the present tense: e  i e  ie o  ue DUH!!!

What’s the purpose of stem-changing verbs? To make words sound better. That’s it! It’s not that complicated!!!

Let’s see how it works… You’ve already learned how to conjugate verbs in the regular present tense. Good news…that all stays the same. The only thing that changes is the stem… WATCH!

Pedir = to order (e  i) Pedir is an IR VERB so we use the IR VERB ENDINGS (o, es, e, imos, en) Ella (pedir) = Ella pide 2. “e” is the regular ir verb ending for “ella” and the “e” in pedir was changed to an “i” because it is a stem-changing verb.

What else do I have to know? Stem-Changing verbs are called BOOT VERBS WHY?

Because… The stem-change only occurs for some of the conjugations… only inside the boot! Pedir (e  i) yo pido nosotros pedimos tu pides vosotros pedis El/ella/Ud pide ellos/ellas/Uds piden

Now you try! e  i Conjugate the verb “servir” for all pronouns e  ie Conjugate the verb “recomendar” for all pronouns o  ue Conjugate the verb “almorzar” for all pronouns

Servir Yo sirvo Nosotros servimos Tu sirves Vosotros servis El/Ella/Ud sirve Ellos/Ellas/Uds sirven

Recomendar Yo recomiendo Nosotros recomendamos Tu recomiendas Vosotros recomendais El/Ella/Ud recomienda Ellos/Ellas/Uds recomiendan

Almorzar Yo almuerzo Nosotros almorzamos Tu almuerzas Vosotros almorzais El/Ella/Ud almuerza Ellos/Ellas/Uds almuerzan
