Ser or Estar? A quick review...

Ser - to be Yo soy nosotros somos Tú eres Él, Ella, Ud. es ellos, ellas, Uds. son * We use SER to express WHAT something JUST IS * (an essential quality)

Ser D - description ex: Ella es alta. O- origin ex: Yo soy de Venezuela. C - characteristics ex: Él es cómico. T - time/date ex: Son las tres/Hoy es martes. O - occupation ex: Tú eres estudiante. R - relationship ex: Ella es mi abuela. She is tall. I am from Venezuela. He is a funny person. It is 3:00 / Today is Tuesday. You are a student. She is my grandmother.

Conjugating Ser... Mi padre es abogado. Mi padre es español y mi madre es norteamericana. Mi hermano y yo somos rubios. Mis padres también son rubios. Nosotros no somos altos. Yo soy flaco, pero mi hermano es gordo. Mis dos hermanas son enfermeras; ellas son muy inteligentes. ¿Cómo eres tú? Eres alto o bajo, flaco o gordo? Tú eres mi amigo. Tú eres peruano, yo soy norteamericano.

P - present progressive ex: Nosotros estamos hablando. Are you feeling well? I am happy. He is in school. My hands are clean. We are speaking. (use with “-ing” verbs)

Conjugatng Estar... Buenas tardes. ¿Cómo está Andrés? Yo no estoy bien. Creo que estoy enfermo. Sí, tú estás pálido (pale). ¿Dónde están tus padres ahora? Mi padre está en la oficina y mi madre está probablemente en el supermercado. ¿Dónde está la oficina de tu padre? Está lejos de la escuela. ¿Quién está en casa ahora? Mis hermanos están en casa ahora.

(that’s just the way she is!) (she’s not usually like that…) An Example... What is she like? She is quiet. Use ser: Ella es callada. (that’s just the way she is!) How is she acting? She is being quiet. Use estar: Ella está callada. (she’s not usually like that…)
