3 1.Use Ser to express inherent traits or characteristics that generally do not change. Ser is used for descriptions that are not about conditions. Who a person is or what a person is like –Ella es sincera. –Sara es mi hermana. What something is or what something is like –La pizza es mi comida favorita. –El edificio es muy alto. Where someone or something is from or what something is made of –La profesora es de Puerto Rico. –El café es de Colombia. –La casa es de adobe.

4 2.Use estar to express a temporary state, emotion, condition, or location: How a person/animal/thing feels ---Ella no puede estar aquí hoy porque está muy enferma. La joven está cansada. El agua está fría. Where someone or something is located (both temporary and permanant location). Los alumnos están en la escuela. Madrid está en España.

5 To remember the uses of estar memorize this rhyme: How you feel or Where you are ALWAYS use the verb ESTAR

6 3.You can often use either ser or estar depending upon what you meant to say. --Note the different messages Él es agresivo. Él está muy agresivo. Ella es muy obstinada. Ella está muy obstinada. He is naturally an aggressive type. He’s not normally that way but now he’s acting in an aggressive manner. She’s a very obstinante type. She’s being very obstinante now.
