Gustar is often translated as to like, but it really means to please or to be pleasing to. Nos gusta el béisbol. = Baseball is pleasing to us.
Gustar and verbs like it are preceded by an indirect object pronoun (me, te, le, nos, os, les) indicating whom is being pleased. The verb agrees with the noun that is pleasing. Me gusta la carne. Meat is pleasing to me. No me gustan las verduras. Vegetables are not pleasing to me.
When using nouns with gustar and verbs like it, you have to include the definite article (el, la, los, las) with the noun. A los chicos no les gusta la escuela. The kids don’t like school. Me gustan las películas de acción. I like action movies. A mi padre le encantan los coches exóticos. My father loves exotic cars.
When talking in the third person, you need to use the preposition a when specifically indicating the person who is being pleased. You must also use le or les. A Juan le gustan las novelas románticas. A mis padres les gusta el arte.
When using infinitives, you always use the singular form of gustar, even when using more than one infinitive. ¿Te gusta escuchar música? Nos gusta cantar y bailar.
