1 Apuntes 30 de septiembre –primero de octubre Gustar y verbos parecidos (Gustar and similar verbs) ¿Te gustan las matemáticas? Do you like math? A mi madre le gustó mucho la película. My mother really liked the movie.

2 Gustar is often translated as to like, but it really means to please or to be pleasing to. Nos gusta el béisbol. = Baseball is pleasing to us.

3 Gustar and verbs like it are preceded by an indirect object pronoun (me, te, le, nos, os, les) indicating whom is being pleased. The verb agrees with the noun that is pleasing. Me gusta la carne. Meat is pleasing to me. No me gustan las verduras. Vegetables are not pleasing to me.

4 When talking in the third person, you need to use the preposition a when specifically indicating the person who is being pleased. You must also use le or les. A Juan le gustan las novelas románticas. A mis padres les gusta el arte.

5 When using infinitives, you always use the singular form of gustar, even when using more than one infinitive. ¿Te gusta escuchar música? Nos gusta cantar y bailar.
