24 Algunos de nuestros compañeros fueron al sepulcro y hallaron todo como habían dicho las mujeres, pero a Él no lo vieron”. 25 Entonces Jesús les dijo: “¡Que insensatos son ustedes y que duros de corazón para creer todo lo anunciado por los profetas! 26 ¿Acaso no era necesario que el Mesías padeciera todo esto y así entrara en su gloria?”

27 Y comenzando por Moisés y siguiendo con todos los profetas, les explico todos los pasajes de la Escritura que se referían a él. 28 Ya cerca del pueblo a donde se dirigían, Él hizo como que iba mas lejos; 29 pero ellos le insistieron, diciendo: “Quédate con nosotros, porque ya es tarde y pronto va a oscurecer”. Y entro para quedarse con ellos.

30 Cuando estaban a la mesa, tomo un pan, pronuncio la bendición, lo partió y se lo dio. 31 Entonces se les abrieron los ojos y lo reconocieron, pero Él se les desapareció. 32 Y ellos se decían el uno al otro: “¡Con razón nuestro corazón ardía, mientras nos hablaba por el camino y nos explicaba las Escrituras!”

33 Se levantaron inmediatamente y regresaron a Jerusalén, donde encontraron reunidos a los Once con sus compañeros, 34 los cuales les dijeron: “De veras ha resucitado el Señor y sé le ha aparecido a Simón”. 35 Entonces ellos contaron lo que les había pasado en el camino y como lo habían reconocido al partir el pan.

Luke 24:13 - 35 13 That very day, the first day of the week, two of Jesus’ disciples were going to a village seven miles from Jerusalem called Emmaus, 14 And they were conversing about all the things that had occurred. 15 And it happened that while they were conversing and debating, Jesus himself drew near and walked with them,

16 but their eyes were prevented from recognizing him. 17 He asked them, “What are you discussing as you walk along?” They stopped, looking downcast. 18 One of them, named Cleopas, said to him in reply, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know of the things that have taken place there in these days?”

19 And he replied to them, “What sort of things 19 And he replied to them, “What sort of things?” They said to him, “The things that happened to Jesus the Nazarene, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, 20 how our chief priests and rulers both handed him over to a sentence of death and crucified him.

21 But we were hoping that he would be the one to redeem Israel; and besides all this, it is now the third day since this took place. 22 Some women from our group, however, have astounded us: they were at the tomb early in the morning 23 and did not find his body; they came back and reported that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who announced that he was alive.

24 Then some of those with us went to the tomb and found things just as the women had described, but him they did not see.” 25 And he said to them, “Oh, how foolish you are! How slow of heart to believe all that the prophets spoke! 26 Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and enter into his glory?”

27 Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them what referred to him in all the scriptures. 28 As they approached the village to which they were going, he gave the impression that he was going on farther. 29 But they urged him, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them.

30 And it happened that, while he was with them at table, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them. 31 With that their eyes were opened and they recognized him, but he vanished from their sight. 32 Then they said to each other, “Were not our hearts burning (within us) while he spoke to us on the way and opened the scriptures to us?”

33 So they set out at once and returned to Jerusalem where they found gathered together the eleven and those with them 34 who were saying, “The Lord has truly been raised and has appeared to Simon!” 35 Then the two recounted what had taken place on the way and how he was made known to them in the breaking of the bread.

Apr. 30, 2017 Today we study the story of the two disciples who saw Jesus risen on the road to Emmaus. We will share what scripture scholars say. And we will see how it resembles other stories of how the Lord Jesus acted in his risen form. Finally we will share a few scripture texts that were fulfilled in the Passion.

In the Jerome Biblical Commentary, Father Carrol Stuhlmueller, C. P In the Jerome Biblical Commentary, Father Carrol Stuhlmueller, C.P., wrote an article entitled “The Gospel According to Luke”. Speaking about the Emmaus Story, he makes six observations: First, the two men are not leaders but represent the followers of Christ Jesus. Second they were troubled and do not understand why Jesus is absent.

(Note that the theme of light and darkness is a favorite Lukan, Johanine, and Pauline theme). We remember Luke 22:53, when Jesus is seized by his enemies, Luke says: “But this is your hour, and the power of darkness.”

Their “eyes were opened” (Luke 24:31) Their “eyes were opened” (Luke 24:31). This term is found several times in the New Testament. It always means there is a deeper understanding of revelation. Note that the term “revelation” means that God chooses to “reveal”, that is, to “remove the veil” as to some divine mystery.

The rising of Jesus from the dead is most certainly a tremendous revelation, too deep to fathom, and more than we can capture into words. It is mind-boggling, awesome in its implications. It is the greatest mystery of our faith.

When Luke 24:31 says: “He vanished”, that means that the miraculous appearance of Jesus was no longer necessary. His presence in the Eucharist suffices.

This story resembles the meeting of Deacon Philip with the Ethiopian eunuch in Acts 8:26-40. First, there is an ignorance of the scriptures on the part of the eunuch. Second, the Deacon provides the explanation that Jesus had to suffer (as drawn from the holy scriptures). Third, there is an insistence to stay longer. And fourth, there is a sudden disappearance. Remember that Luke is also the author of the Acts of the Apostles.

Caird, in his book: “Saint Luke” p. 257 ff. notes that Jesus in this story appears as a “fellow traveler.” He is no longer subject to the limitations of time and space. He is alive and well. He “transcends time and space” in his new resurrected Body. They recognize him at the “breaking of the bread” (Luke 24:30). This term is also cited in Acts 2:42; Acts. 20:7; 1 Corinthians 10:16, and Luke 9:16.

He says that perhaps like many a modern skeptic, the disciples on the Road to Emmaus were convinced that miracles of this sort couldn’t happen. They were expecting a nationalistic messiah. Jesus dispels their disillusionment by citing the scriptures. No particular texts are cited. Let me offer a few that I have found.
