Review Verb Infinitive Conjugate Subject Conjugations Subject pronouns The action of the sentence. an unconjugated verb. In English it usually includes the word “to” – to be, to swim, to eat, to live, etc. It has no tense (present, past, future) or form (alignment with a subject). In Spanish all infinitives end in either -ar, -er-, ir. To change the verb from the infinitive so that it has tense and a form that matches the subject. The person or thing doing the action (the doer) the forms of the verb after you conjugate it. Replaces the proper names or noun representing the subject.

Subject pronouns Singular Plural We (m) = nosotros We (f) = nosotras I = yo 1st person You all info. (m) = vosotros You all info. (f) = vosotras 2nd person You = tú 3rd person He = él She = ella You = Ud. They (m) = ellos They (f) = ellas You all = Uds.

Conjugating Verbs To conjugate a verb in Spanish you “Chop suey” – take off the ending, -ar, -er, -ir you are left with the stem of the verb comer – er = com (the stem) “schmoosh” – add on the appropriate ending to match the subject. But What Are The Endings?

There are three types of regular verbs in Spanish: verbs that end in –ar, verbs that end in –er, and verbs that end in –ir. You’ve already learned –ar verbs: To conjugate an ar verb, take off the ar ending and add the correct ending to match the subject. yo hablo nosotros hablamos tú hablas vosotros habláis él, ella habla ellos hablan

Now for –er verbs: To form –er verbs, take off the –er and then add the following endings: comer (to eat) Yo –o Nosotros -emos como comemos Tú –es Vosotros -éis comes coméis Él Ellos come comen Ella -e Ellas -en Ud. Uds. Notice that the only difference between –er verbs and –ar verbs is that you use e’s instead of a’s: -ar -er -o -amos -o -emos -as -áis -es -éis -a -an -e -en

Leer: to read Le (stem) Yo leo Nosotros leemos Tú lees Vosotros leéis Él Ellos Ella lee Ellas leen Ud. Uds.

Er Verbs with Irregular yo Forms Ver (to see) V (stem) Yo veo Nosotros vemos Tú ves Vosotros véis Él Ellos Ella ve Ellas ven Ud. Uds.

Er Verbs with Irregular yo Forms Hacer (to make or to do) Hac (stem) Yo hago Nosotros hacemos Tú haces Vosotros hacéis Él Ellos Ella hace Ellas hacen Ud. Uds.

Now for –ir verbs. Drop the –ir and add the following endings: abrir (to open) -o -imos abro abrimos -es -ís abres abrís -e -en abre abren Do you see what the difference is between –er and –ir verbs? They’re just alike except for the nosotros and vosotros forms: -er -ir -o -emos -o -imos -es -éis -es -ís -e -en -e -en

Ir (To go) Ir (to go) is NOT an –Ir verb. Ir (to go) is an irregular verb Yo voy Nosotros vamos Tú vas Vosotros vais Él Ellos Ella va Ellas van Ud. Uds.

Las diferencias The only difference between –ar verbs and –er verbs is that you use e’s instead of a’s in the –er verbs. The only difference between –er verbs and –ir verbs is the nosotros and vosotros forms.
