Uses of Estar Estar is one of two verbs which mean to be. Ser is the other. Estar is used in the following situations. To express temporary conditions: emotional/physical states and opinions. Juan esta enfermo hoy. Juan is sick today. ¿Tú estás loco? Are you crazy? Las chicas están muy bonitas hoy. The girls are very pretty today.
