Tener + que + infinitive Another use of TENER (to have) Tener + que + infinitive Another use of TENER (to have). is the expression Tener + que + infinitive This formula is used to express obligation or necessity, “someone has to do something”.

This expression is used only if there is a subject that can be identified. Tener is conjugated according to the subject of the sentence. Ex. Yo tengo que estudiar. I have to study. **Remember the verb after the expression stays in the infinitive form.

The formula: Hay +que + infinitive is used to express the idea of “one must do something”, or “it is necessary to do something”. It is a more general expression since there is no specific subject. Therefore the verb form “hay” is always used and never changed. Ex. Hay que hablar español en España.
