2 Remember that… Infinitives end in: They mean “to ____”
-ar -er -ir They mean “to ____” patinar  to skate tener  to have salir  to go out Don’t have a subject

3 Remember the infinitive verb “ir”
“Ir”  to go Yo voy Tú vas Usted/Él/Ella va Nosotros/as vamos Vosotros/as vais Ustedes/Ellos/Ellas van

4 What someone is or isn’t going to do
To talk about what someone is or isn’t going to do, use “ir” with “a” followed by an infinitive. *Remember to conjugate “ir” according to the subject in the sentence. (Subject) + ir + a + Infinitive Ella + va + a + nadar  She is going to swim. Él + no + va + a + patinar  He is not going to skate.

5 Continued… (Tú) Vas a estudiar  you are going to study.
¿(Tú) Vas a estudiar?  are you going to study? No, (yo) voy a descansar  No, I’m going to rest. ¿(Ustedes) van a salir?  Are you [all] going to go out? Si, (nosotros) vamos a comer.  Yes, we are going to eat.

6 Bonus Questions Él va a comer pizza. He is going to eat pizza.
Vamos a estudiar mucho. We are going to study a lot. Ellos van a patinar. They are going to skate.

7 Bonus Questions ¿Qué vas a hacer mañana? Voy a estudiar mañana.
What are you going to do tomorrow? Voy a estudiar mañana. I’m going to study tomorrow. Mi amigo Pepe va a jugar al ajedrez después de la escuela. My friend Pepe is going to play chess after school.

8 Can we use “ir” twice? If the formula is (conjugated ir+a+infinitive), can we use “ir” twice to say “going to go” ? YES!!! Yo voy a ir a______________ Yo voy a ir a la escuela. Yo voy a ir al parque.

9 Double uses of “ir” Yo voy a la playa I go to the beach. V.S.
Yo voy a ir a la playa I’m going to go to the beach.

10 Comparison Yo voy a la playa
Here we don’t have an infinitive, and are NOT saying what we are going to do. We are simply stating “I go to the beach”

11 Comparison Yo voy a ir a la playa.
Here we are stating what we are going to do because we use an infinitive. “Ir” is the infinitive here. I am going to go to the beach

12 Practice Yo voy al cine. I go to the movies. Yo voy a ir al cine.
I am going to go the movies. Yo voy al centro comercial. I go to the mall. Yo voy a ir al centro comercial. I am going to go to the mall. Él va a la playa. He goes to the beach. Él va a ir a la playa. He is going to go to the beach.

13 Whats the difference? Él patina. vs. Él va a patinar.
He skates. vs. He is going to skate. Nosotros cantamos. vs. Nosotros vamos a cantar. We sing. vs. We are going to sing. Estudio mucho. vs. Voy a estudiar mucho. I study a lot vs. I am going to study a lot.

14 To say when you are going…
To say that you are going to do something on a certain day of a particular week, use “el” before the weekday. El viernes voy a estudiar. El sábado voy a patinar. El domingo voy a ir de compras.

15 Let’s try it… El lunes voy a patinar. On Monday I’m going to skate.
El martes voy a ir a la casa de Pepe. On Tuesday I’m going to go to Pepe’s house. El domingo voy a la iglesia. On Sunday I go to church. El miércoles voy a estudiar. On Wednesday I’m going to study. El jueves voy a ir a una reunión. On Thursday I’m going to go to a meeting.

16 To say at what time.. USE “A la/las ________” - a la una - a las dos +
Él va a ir a las tres. he is going to go at 3 Él va a ir a la una y media.  he is going to go at 1:30

17 Let’s try it… Ellos van a las tres. They go at three.
Los estudiantes van a ir a las ocho. The students are going to go at eight. Miguel va a ir a las cuatro de la tarde. Miguel is going to go at four in the afternoon. Nosotros vamos a ir a las dos. We are going to go at two.

El lunes yo voy a estudiar, pero el martes voy a ir al cine. Mi amigo Pepe va a jugar al béisbol conmigo. ¿Ustedes van a salir también? ¿Qué vas a hacer esta semana? Mi amiga María va a ir de compras el sábado.
