Preterite Verbs You use the preterite to talk about things that happened in the past. Here are the regular preterite forms of verbs ending in –ar, -er, and –ir.

CAMINAR – to walk caminé caminaste caminó caminamos caminasteis caminaron

COMER – to eat comí comiste comió comimos comisteis comieron

VIVIR – to live viví viviste vivió vivimos vivisteis vivieron

-gar, -car, -zar Verbs Remember that verbs ending in –gar, -car, and –zar have a spelling change ONLY in the yo form in the preterite. The other forms of these verbs are regular.

Preterite i > y Stem Change Verbs Verbs ending in –uir, such as destruir, have a spelling change in the preterite. The i becomes y in the Ud/él/ella and Uds./ellos/ellas forms.
