How does “gustar” work? “I like pizza.” “Elena likes to swim.” In English, the subject is the person doing the liking. “Me gusta la pizza.” “A Elena le gusta nadar.” In Spanish, the subject is the thing being liked. The Spanish actually translates to… “The pizza is pleasing to me.” y “Swimming is pleasing to Elena.” In other words… The SUBJECT is the noun/verb that DOES the pleasing. The person just receives the pleasure. That’s why you only conjugate gustar 2 ways in the present tense. What are they? GUSTA GUSTAN Muy bien!!!!!

Infinitives In Spanish, infinitives are verbs that don’t have a subject or tense (past, present, future, etc.). IN OTHER WORDS: They are not yet conjugated. There are three infinitive endings in Spanish: -ar  nadar, patinar, estudiar -er  comer, correr, hacer -ir  escribir, salir, vestir

Gustar with Infinitives Like nouns, infinitives are used after gustar to say what people like to do. Me gusta patinar.  I like to skate. Le gusta cantar.  He/She likes to sing. Always use the singular version of gustar with an infinitive. Nos gusta alquilar películas.  We like to RENT movies.

What about other things we like?? Me gusta mi gato  I like my cat. SINGULAR NOUN! Me gusta la escuela  I like school. SINGULAR NOUN! What if you like more than one thing? I like movies. Me gustan las películas. I like books. Me gustan los libros.

Why do they change? A ti te gustan los libros de amor. A nosotros no nos gusta la tarea. What are our verbs? “gustan” y “gusta” Why do they change?
