Uses of the subjunctive To need the subjunctive, your sentence must have 2 clauses: MAIN DEPENDENT CLAUSE que CLAUSE Ex: I hope that he does his homework.

One usually sees the subjunctive in the dependent (subordinate) clause of a sentence.  The classic Spanish teacher way to teach this concept is the truck.  The independent clause (the truck) is joined to the dependent clause (the trailer) by the word que (the hitch).  If the independent clause conveys certainty, objectivity or fact, the dependent clause will be in the indicative mood. If the independent clause conveys potential events, hypothetical situations or subjectivity, the dependent clause will be in the subjunctive mood.

Indicative vs. Subjunctive: The Basics Dependent Clause Indicative (the regular present tense as we have used it so far) Certainty Belief Actual, objective fact. Yo sé que ella tiene mucho dinero.
