We generalize and say that the Imperfect is used to talk about what you use to do and what you were like as a child. It is used to describe things in the past. We will use the acronym MUDHAT to help us know when to use it.

¿Cuando lo usamos? When do we use it?

M:Mental States: Physical Estaba enferma. I was sick. Estabamos contentos. We were happy. Emotional Pensar (to think) or Creer (to believe). Pienso que ella estaba loca.

U: USE TO In English, the Imperfect translates to “use to” or “would”. Cuando era niña miraba Sesame Street con mi hermano. When I was a little girl, I use to watch Sesame Street with my brother.

D:Description: (SER) Description Mi abuela era bonita y delgada. Bob Espoja era comico y bajo. La casa era bonita y grande.

H: Habitual (repeated)actions Actions that were repeated habitually in the past. (todos los dias, meses, veranos, viernes etc.) Ibamos a Ocean City todos los veranos. We use to go to OC every summer. In summary: Use the Imperfect when…. any type of describing is being done in the past….whether it is the time, age, what is going on in the background, how someone is feeling, or what something/someone looks like.

Let’s look at some examples…..

1. Un día en la playa Todos los veranos mis amigos y yo ibamos a la playa. Siempre nos gustaba ir a la misma playa. La playa de Cape Henlopen era la playa mas hermosa de todas las playas de Delaware. Estabamos muy contentos porque hacía mucho sol, no había mucha gente y teníamos los trajes de baño mas bonitos de todo la gente en la playa. Era un día perfecto!

Why? 1.Todos los veranos mis amigos y yo ibamos a la playa. 2. Siempre nos gustaba ir a la misma playa. La playa de Cape Henlopen era la playa mas hermosa de todas las playas de Delaware.

3. Estabamos muy contentos porque hacía mucho sol, no había mucha gente y teníamos los trajes de baño mas bonitos de todo la gente en la playa. 4. Era un día perfecto!

2. Rainy Night Eran las nueve de la noche. Era viernes. Hacía mal tiempo. Llovía. Todos estábamos en casa. Mamá y Papá miraban la televisión; yo leía una novela de Twilight; mi hermana hablaba por teléfono con su novio en su cuarto. Esnupi (nuestro perro) dormía detrás del sillón en la sala.

In summary… The Imperfect does not have SPECIFIC times when something happened like anoche or ayer….. Think of the Imperfect when DESCRIBING things in the past. If you can visualize it by reading it, then use the Imperfect.
