El Pretérito: Past Actions In both Spanish and English there are many ways of expressing the past tense. The preterite is the past tense which expresses SPECIFIC ACTIONS that happened in the past. For example: Yesterday I showered after practice. Ayer, me duché despues de la practica. I wore a blue dress for the dance. Me puse un vestido azul para el baile.

El Pretérito: Past Actions In the preterite we change the endings on the verbs to express who did the action and the idea that it is a specific action in the past. There are endings for –ar verbs and for –er/-ir verbs.
