Kindergarten Corner What We’re Learning… Reading: Students will continue to listen to many read alouds as they learn how to properly handle books; identify front and back covers; turn pages; identify pictures vs. text; and follow words from left to right, top to bottom. Students will work in small groups to practice name writing, letter/sound recognition, and reading strategies. (SOL K.5 a-d; K.7 a, d; K.8 b; K.9) Writing: Students will keep practicing adding details and labels to our pictures about real- life events. Your child will now begin using letter sounds to stretch out words to write them in their stories. We will begin to see short sentences at the bottom of their writing as we learn to write from left to right. (SOL K.12 a, c, d) Math: Students will continue recognizing numbers 0-10 as we match, count sets, write numbers, compare numbers, and identify missing numbers. We will also learn to identify the ordinal position of objects (1 st - 10 th place). Classes will also begin a patterns unit at the end of the month. Students will learn to identify, describe, extend, compare, and create patterns. We will observe patterns of colors, shapes, pictures, and rhythm while also identifying their repeating unit. (SOL K.1; K.2 b, c; K.3; K.4b; K.15; K.16). Science/Social Studies: Students will be introduced to democratic decision-making as we vote for things and people in our classrooms. Students will also learn about past versus present as we study the changes over time in homes, transportation, and schools. This will help us make a connection as we learn about the people and events of the 1 st Thanksgiving and the celebrations of today’s. (Social Studies SOL K.8; K.2; K.1b). November 2015 Last month was very exciting for our kindergarten classes as we attended our very 1 st field trip to the pumpkin patch as well as our 1 st SOAR festival for being quality, responsible classes! We look forward to learning many more new concepts this month, especially as we learn about and honor Thanksgiving. We wish you an early happy and safe holiday break. We look forward to discussing your child’s progress at November 4 th Parent-Teacher Conferences.  Nov. 2– Teacher Workday; No School  Nov. 3 – Parent/Teacher Conferences; No School  Nov. 10 – Advisory Council Mtg., 6 p.m.  Nov. 11 – Veterans’ Day; No School  Nov. 24 – Kinder./1 st Grade Thanksgiving Feast  Nov – Thanksgiving Break; No School Mrs. Danielle Delo Ms. Erika Powers Mrs. Stephanie Wehrmann
