Future Tense Regular & Irregular Verbs

The basics … Unsurprisingly, we use the future tense to talk about actions that will happen in the future. We use the future to translate actions such as: The first thing you need to get your head around is that in Spanish there are two constructions that we can use to talk about the future. We are going to look at both.

IR + A + Infinitive construction At GCSE you were probably told to use this construction for the future: IR (present tense) voy vas va vamos vais van + a + Infinitive Spot Check : How do you say: I will live She will eat They will speak We will go You guys (vosotros) will play You (usted) will work Spot Check : How do you say: I will live She will eat They will speak We will go You guys (vosotros) will play You (usted) will work

The Simple Future The other structure involves adding the following endings onto the infinitive. InfinitiveSubject Endings habl ar volv er abr ir yo é tú ás él/ella/usted á nosotros emos vosotros éis ellos/ellas/ustedes án Remember that we dont remove the AR, ER or IR from the infinitive!

Irregular Stems There are (of course) some irregular verbs in the future. Instead of adding the endings to the infinitive, we add them to an irregular stem. The endings are always regular! Can you guess the infinitive of these irregular future stems? caber poner decir haber salir hacer poder tener querer valer saber venir Spot Check : How do you say: It wont fit Shell know Well want Youll (tú) speak I will go out She wont have it Spot Check : How do you say: It wont fit Shell know Well want Youll (tú) speak I will go out She wont have it

Difference in meaning Some textbooks say that we use the ir + a + infinitive construction for actions that will happen in the immediate future, and the infinitive + future endings construction for actions that will happen in the medium to long term. In reality, this is not the case. The two are almost interchangeable. In spoken language the ir + a + infinitive construction is more common. However, that doesnt mean that you can learn just one for the exam – you need to learn both!

Additional use The simple future also has another interesting use apart from referring to future actions: We use it to express probability or wonder. In English we would translate these expressions using must. Lets see some examples: o The telephone rings and Pilar says: ¿quién será? o Two friends are together an one asks the other (who doesnt have a watch ¿qué hora es? and the other replies no sé, serán las dos
