Present Progressive We use the present tense to talk about an action that always or often takes place or that is happening now.

Present Progressive Ellos comen ensaladas. They eat salads. They are eating salads.

Present Progressive: Spelling Changes In the following verbs, the i of -iendo changes to y in order to follow the 3 vowel rule which states when an unaccented i is between two vowels it must change to a y. creer: creyendo leer: leyendo traer: trayendo Oír: oyendo

*Exceptions Seguir – siguiendo (because the u is working with the g to keep a hard g sound) Conseguir – consiguiendo

Present Progressive: Ir stem-changing verbs Ir verbs keep a stem-change in the present participle forms however the change can be different. E - IE verbs will be E – I E – I verbs will remain E – I O – UE verbs will be O - U

Remember this is for verbs ending in IR ONLY AR and ER verbs will NOT have a stem- change when forming the present participle

Present Progressive: Irregular Forms When you use pronouns with the present progressive, you can put them directly in front of the conjugated form of estar or attach them to the present participle.

Present Progressive: Irregular Forms Notice that if a pronoun is attached to the present participle, an accent mark is needed. Write the accent mark over the vowel that is normally stressed in the present tense. (2 nd to last syllable of the original word)
