Indirect Object Pronouns (IOPs)

 Los objetos directos (Direct object pronouns). DOPs answer the question “What?”. ◦ He reads the book.  He reads What? The book. ◦ She does the homework.  She does What? The homework. ◦ He sends the letter.  He sends What? The letter.

 Yo siempre decía la verdad.  Yo siempre la decía.

¿Cuándo se usa un objeto indirecto? The indirect object pronoun (IOP) answers the question "To whom?” or "For whom?” ◦ He reads the book to his sister.  He reads To Whom? His sister. ◦ She gives the homework to the teacher.  She gives it To Whom? The teacher. ◦ He sends the letter to his grandma.  He sends it To Whom? His grandma.

 Because le and les have more than 1 meaning, you can make their meaning clear by adding a + name, noun or pronoun.  You’ve seen these before with something like:  A Felipe le gusta bailar.  A las chicas les gustan los deportes.  Like reflexive pronouns and DOPs, IOPs are placed before the conjugated verb or attached to an infinitive (when there are 2 verbs).

 1. Lolita siempre _______ decía la verdad a sus padres.  2. Todos los días Fernando _______ decía una mentira a su hermanito.  3. Mis abuelos siempre ________ daban muñecos nuevos (a mi hermano y yo).  4. Ainoa y Richard_______ invitan a su boda (a ti).

 Ejemplo: ¿Qué le dio (gave) Jóseba a Sergio? ◦ Jóseba le dio dinero a Sergio para hacer apuestas.  ¿Qué le envió el Club Athletic a Sophie? ◦ Le envió a Sophie dos entradas a un partido.  ¿Qué le dio (gave) Ainoa a Richard en el primer episodio? ◦ Le dio a Richard su número de teléfono.  ¿Qué le dijo (did he say) Mikel a Begoña (su madre) en el último episodio? ◦ Mikel le dijo a su madre que le gusta el mar e ir de pesca.  ¿Qué les sirvió Richard a los clientes en el bar? ◦ Les sirvió pintxos a los clientes en el bar.
