Direct object pronouns allow us to avoid repetition of nouns!

 A direct object receives the action of a verb and serves to answer the question What? or Whom? in relation to that verb  Are you going to see the movie? (direct object noun) Yes, we’re going to see it.  Have you met my cousins? (direct object pronoun) No, I haven’t met them.

A direct object pronoun replaces a direct object noun. Some of the Spanish direct object pronouns should look familiar: Me me Nos us Te you (tú) Lo him, it, you (Ud.) La her, it, you (Ud.) Los them, you (Uds.) Las them, you (Uds.)
