El subjuntivo (the subjunctive mood)

What is subjunctive???? The subjunctive is a “mood” that is used for things considered hypothetical or “uncertain”. Until now, you have been using the indicative- this mood has been used to report facts and things that are considered “certain”. -I am sure that he will win the game. -I hope that he wins the game.

Certain or uncertain??? She knows that you are coming to the party. She hopes that you can come to the party. I don’t doubt that you are going to Texas. I doubt that you are going in December. He will come with me. I want him to come with me.

12 reasons to use subjunctive… 1. Hopes/wishes7. Negation/denial 2. Giving advice8. Judgment 3. Stating opinion9. Doubt/disbelief 4. Unknown/nonexistent10. Adverbial Conj. 5. Feelings11. Future actions 6. Will/desire12. Hypothetical situations

3 things you must have to use Subjunctive… 1. Main Clause/principal clause Has a present tense, indicative verb- “trigger phrase” 2. Subordinate Clause This is where the subjunctive will be used. This clause is join to the first by the word “QUE” 3. Subject change The subject must change between the main and subordinate clauses. -Yo necesito que mis estudiantes hagan la tarea.

How do I form the Subjunctive??? 3 steps: 1. Conjugate in the present tense “yo” form (remember irregular verb in present tense yo form!!!) 2. Take off the “O” 3. Add the “opposite endings” : -arer/ir eemosaamos eseisasais eenaan

IRREGULARS!!! Remember this word: DISHES D- DarH- Haber I- IrE- Estar S- SerS- Saber

A couple more things… Verbs ending in –car –gar –zar –ger –guir have spelling changes in the subjunctive: ALL FORMS -car c changes to qu -gar g changes to gu -zar z changes to c -ger g changes to j -guir gu changes to g * These verbs have regular endings in subjunctive

Práctica: conjugate the following verbs in the subjunctive: Ella (hacer) Ustedes (ser) Tú (empezar) Nosotros (tener) Usted (salir) Tú (buscar)

Subjunctive for Unknown/nonexistent Busco un novio que no sea creído. No hay nadie que confie en Marcos. ¿Conoces a alguien que hable francés?

Careful!!!...if the statement is being made about something that is known, use INDICATIVE: Tengo un amigo que me ayuda mucho. Conozco a muchas personas muy solidarias. Tengo un novio muy generoso y atento.

Expressions of Feelings: Me alegra que (it makes me happy that) Me gusta que (I like that) Me molesta que (it bothers me that) Me frustra que (it frustrates me that) Me sorprende que (it surprises me that) Me preocupa que (it worries me that) Siento que ( It makes me sorry that) Me irrita que (It irritates me that)

Ejemplos: Siento que lleguemos tan tarde. Me alegra que mis amigos vengan a mi fiesta.

Subjunctive for hopes and wishes When one sentence is joined with another sentence that expresses a hope or wish, the verb AFTER que is in the subjunctive. Look for these triggers in the main clause: querer:(want) Quiero que el equipo gane el partido. esperar: (wish) Luis espera que la playa sea bonita. preferir: (prefer) Prefiero que no salgamos de la casa ahora. Ojalá:(hope) Ojalá que no tengamos un examen hoy.

What about when there’s no change in Subject??? USE THE INFINITIVE Enrique prefiere ir al campo. Yo quiero venir con ellos. Ella espera llegar temprano.

Negation/Denial No es verdad que (it’s not true that) No es cierto que (it’s not certain that) No creer que (to not believe that) No estar de acuerdo (to not agree that) No negar que (to not negate that)

Ejemplos: No es verdad que haya tanta discriminación en nuestro país. No creen que Jose sea muy chosmoso. No es cierto que tenga una impresión equivocada de tí.

Careful!!! If these phrases are changed to express agreement, use INDICATIVE Es verdad que hay mucha discriminación en nuestro país. Creo que José es muy chismoso. Es cierto que él tiene una impresión equivocada de tí.

Subjunctive for giving advice… Use the subjunctive form of a verb after the following “trigger verbs” in the main clause: *aconsejar que…. *Recomendar que… *Sugerir (e-ie) que…

Ejemplos: Te aconsejo que traigas el abrigo. Te recomiendo que des una caminata por la cuidad. Oscar sugiere que ellos lleven un traje de baño al lago.

Subjunctive for giving opinions… Use the subjunctive form of the verb after these expressions for stating an opinion: -Es mejor que… -Es buena idea que… -Es importante que…

Ejemplos: Es mejor que hagamos una reservacion temprano. Es buena idea que ustedes vayan a la playa hoy. Es importante que no lleguemos tarde al aeropuerto.
