2 El subjuntivo The subjunctive is used mainly in multiple clause sentences. 1st clause = main clause must have a subject and a verb 2nd clause = subordinate clause If the main clause expresses will, influence, emotion, doubt, or denial then… The subordinate clause must be in the subjunctive

3 How do you conjugate in the present subjunctive?

4 Present subjunctive conjugations:
Step 1: conjugate the verb into the yo form Step 2: drop the “o” from the yo form Step 3: add the opposite endings (ar verbs=er/ir endings; er/ir verbs= ar endings) The present subjunctive hablar - hablo comer - como vivir - vivo hable coma hables comas hablemos comamos habléis comáis hablen coman

5 Present subjunctive conjugations:
Irregular “yo” forms show the same irregularity in all of the forms The present subjunctive conocer - conozco tener - tengo ver - veo conozca tenga vea conozcas tengas conozcamos tengamos conozcáis tengáis conozcan tengan

6 Present subjunctive conjugations:
Verbs that stem change in the present tense have the same stem changes in present subjunctive *beware of spelling changes The present subjunctive jugar - juego pensar - pienso entender - entiendo dormir - duermo *juegue piense entienda duerma duermas *durmamos *durmáis duerman

8 Spelling changes in el subjuntivo:
Destruir - destruyo destruya Proteger- protejo proteja Recoger- recojo recoja Cazar- cazo cace Reducir- reduzco reduzca
