Transcripción de la presentación:

The impersonal and passive se Una palabrita, muchos trabajos Se hablan español e ingles aquí. The impersonal and passive se Español 2: Capítulo 3

¿Qué significa? Impersonal se Passive se Vague subjects: “people” “one” “you” “they” Passive se The person who does the action is not mentioned. Our verb matches the object (singular or plural). We use the passive se to say what is or is not allowed. Generalmente se bebe café en la mañana. Generally people drink coffee in the morning. ¿Cuándo se bebe café? When does one drink coffee? Se puede beber café en la noche. “You” can drink coffee at night. Se dice que el café es malo para la salud. “They” say coffee is bad for your health. Se vende café aquí. Coffee is sold here. Se venden café y pan dulce aquí. Coffee and sweet bread is sold here. Se prohíbe fumar. Smoking is prohibited. Se permiten animales. Animals are permitted.

¿Cómo lo usamos y formamos? With the impersonal se we only use the third person singular conjugation. With the passive se we use either the third person singular or third person plural conjugation. 1 Yo Nosotros / Nosotras Tú Vosotros / Vosotras Él / ella / usted Ellos / ellas / ustedes 2 3 Singular Plural

¿Cómo lo usamos y formamos? Impersonal se Passive se We use the impersonal se with intransitive verbs. Intransitive verbs do not take the object in the sentence. We only use the third person singular conjugations with the impersonal se We use the passive se with transitive verbs. Transitive verbs do take the object of the sentence We use the third person singular and plural conjugations with the passive se because the verb has to match the object of the sentence. Yo como mucho pavo. I eat a lot of turkey. Se comen muchas papas en el Día de Acción de Gracias. A lot of potatoes are eaten on Thanksgiving Day. Yo como mucho. I eat a lot. Se come mucho en el Día de Acción de Gracias. People eat a lot on Thanksgiving Day. There is an object that is being eaten so this is a transitive verb. There isn’t an object that is being eaten so this is an intransitive verb.

¿Cómo sabemos la diferencia? It depends on what we want to say. Is there a vague subject or no subject at all? If we want a sentence with a vague subject like “one”, “people”, “you”, or “they”, use the impersonal se. Se + third person singular If we want a sentence with no subject we use the passive se. This is also known as passive voice. Se + third person singular or plural, depending on the object One buys bread at the bakery. Se compra pan en la panadería. People buy ice cream and apples at the grocery store. Se compra helado y manzanas en le tienda de comestibles. Bread is sold at the bakery. Se vende pan en la panadería. Ice cream and apples are sold at the bakery. Se venden helado y manzanas en le tienda de comestibles.
