3 VERBS n A verb usually names the action in a sentence. n We call the verb that ends in –ar – er or -ir an INFINITIVE

4 VERBS n The INFINITIVE is the form you would find in a Spanish dictionary. n In English it means n “to + (verb)”

5 These are some INFINITIVES you already know: n Enseñar n Estudiar n Hablar n Bailar n Cantar n Dibujar n Escuchar n Esquiar n Montar n Nadar n Pasar tiempo n Patinar n And several more!

6 Conjugation n Changing the verb to agree with the subject!

7 IN SPANISH: n The last letter or letters of the verb tell you who does the action.

8 IN SPANISH: n To change an INFINITIVE to a form that tells who is doing the action, remove the –ar, -er, -ir ending and add the appropriate ending.

10 STEM / ENDING n For every INFINITIVE in Spanish there is a STEM and an ENDING.

11 STEM / ENDING n For example, for “estudiar,”…”estudi” is the stem. n “ar” is the ending.

12 Spanish changings endings to agree with the subject too! In Spanish, there are 6 endings. These endings correspond to the subject.

14 In Spanish We use the stem of the infinitive and add on the appropriate ending in order to form a conjugated verb. Hablar = habl = hablo

15 THE VOSOTROS n Verb forms ending in áis, such as estudiáis, are used mainly in the country of Spain only.

16 Let’s conjugate n 1 st drop the –ar ending from the infinitive. n 2 nd add the appropriate ending to the stem.
