1 RED HAT ENTERPRISE VIRTUALIZATION 3.0
LA ALTERNATIVA ESTRATEGICA EN VIRTUALIZACIÓN Introduce yourself here on this slide, and that you will be talking about Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization 3.0. You should know what your audience is: are you talking to a net new virtualization customer, the Linux/UNIX team that is moving to virtualization, a Red Hat customer looking to virtualize RHEL, a current VMware user looking for a strategic alternative, or a VMware tire-kicker. See the How To Sell RHEV 3.0 training for more information on how to approach these very different customer bases and how to adjust your messaging and talking points appropriately. Name Title Date 1

2 AGENDA RHEV Antecedentes / Dinámicas de Mercado Componentes de RHEV
Ventajas / Beneficios de RHEV “El Mundo Real” / RHEV Casos de Éxito Próximos Pasos The agenda: We will talk about the market dynamics in the virtualization space and how RHEV fits We will do a brief architectural review of RHEV We will dive into the advantages of introducing RHEV into your environment We will explore some real-world RHEV use cases where customers benefited from the feature and economic benefits of RHEV And finally, we can discuss next steps. 2

If you look at the virtualization market today, analysts from Gartner to IDC say that in early 2012, about 50% of x86 workloads are virtualized, and that most organizations are looking to virtualize most of their workloads over the next three to five years. Virtualization is a mature technology, most organizations have developed the policies, procedures, and culture for deploying virtual workloads. What hasn't happened yet in virtualization that one would expect in a mature IT technology is competition that increases choice and lowers cost. Nevertheless, most organizations are now moving to multi-vendor strategies for virtualization. While a single vendor may have made sense when organizations we at less than 50% virtualization, it now makes sense for customers to foster choice in virtualization just as they have with other datacenter technologies.

And if you look at what is driving virtualization adoption today, while higher-level cloud and management functionality is gaining momentum, the top reason to implement virtualization is still to lower costs. VMware continues to dominate the market, with 60-80% of server virtualization installs. And although the technology is mature, pricing for virtualization continues to rise even as more management services are layered on top. So what's different now?

— VMware debería preocuparse más por Red Hat, InformationWeek, Septiembre 2011 What's become clear is that more organizations are looking for an alternative to proprietary virtualization. Analysts like InfoTech and Gartner report growing interest even among former VMware diehards. Partly, it is because the lead that VMware has enjoyed over its competitors has shrunk considerably. In fact, almost a year ago the previous version of RHEV 2.2 came in a close second to the then-shipping vSphere 4 in an InfoWorld virtualization shootout and bested alternatives that had been on the market far longer. And InformationWeek not only sees the increased competition, but that Red Hat and our open source alternative is uniquely positioned to take on proprietary virtualization. 5 5

" — Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization Whitepaper, IDC, Diciembre 2011 RHEV 3.0 offers a true alternative to the proprietary virtualization solutions on the market today, and aims to do for virtualization what Linux did to the UNIX market – accelerate adoption, increase innovation, and reduce costs. RHEV is fully open source software, based on the KVM hypervisor technology, the Red Hat Enterprise Linux kernel, and the oVirt.org virtualization management project. 6

7 RHEV: alternativa estratégica a VMWare y elección natural para máquinas virtuales LINUX
RHEV SOLUCIÓN COMPLETA DE INFRAESTRUCTURA VIRTUAL Consolidación del Servidor Abstracción del Hardware Entornos cloud Privada Migración Unix a Linux Desarrollo con “Datos Grandes”/ Modo Híbrido Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) If we look at the RHEV architecture briefly, RHEV combines the power of the KVM hypervisor with a robust virtualization management system designed for all virtualization use cases. RHEV is a natural choice for Linux virtual machines because the KVM hypervisor leverages the power of Linux to provide unbeatable performance for all workloads, Linux or Windows. RHEV handles basic server consolidation and hardware abstraction. RHEV can serve as a platform for private cloud, using the RHEV User Portal, Red Hat Cloud products, or products from our RHEV ecosystem partners. RHEV also maintains the ability to run native Linux applications side-by-side with virtual machines, allowing organizations to break the divisions between physical and virtual silos. And finally, RHEV addresses desktop virtualization with the RHEV for Desktops addition. 7

8 RHEV ES MADURO Y ESTÁ LISTO PARA IMPLEMENTACIONES DE VIRTUALIZACIÓN A GRAN ESCALA...
In terms of both the hypervisor and the management system, RHEV is a mature technology designed for large and medium scale deployments. The KVM hypervisor was released to open source in 2006 and almost immediately accepted into the Linux kernel. Because KVM uses Linux technologies to host and schedule virtual machines, it required almost no changes to Linux, making it a natural addition. And being part of the kernel means that KVM compatibility is maintained as part of every Linux update (which is not the case for Xen—there is an entire FAQ on Xen FUD around “integration” into the Linux kernel that you may want to reference). And KVM is not a Red Hat-only technology: a robust community of users, including corporate partners like Intel, IBM, and Cisco, actively contribute to its development. The RHEV Manager is similarly robust, having made its first appearance in 2007 as part of the SolidIce product and now on its third major Red Hat release. In November 2011, Red Hat donated all of the RHEV source code to launch the oVirt.org project, an enterprise ready open source virtualization management system upon which all future versions of RHEV will be based. 8

9 MILES DE CLIENTES DE TODO EL MUNDO IMPLEMENTAN HOY RHEV EN SUS ENTORNOS DE PRODUCCIÓN
Major customers are already using RHEV in production today. Some highlights: Qualcomm using RHEV as a second strategic virtualizaiton platform for hosting RHEL and Windows workloads IBM hosting its public cloud offerings on RHEV Cortal Consors hosts its online banking application in Europe handling millions of accounts on JBoss on RHEL on RHEV. Dreamworks hosts its backend Oracle Financials systems on RHEV *** CON APLICACIONES DE MISIÓN CRÍTICA CORRIENDO SOBRE RHEV 9

10 AGENDA RHEV Antecedentes / Dinámicas de Mercado Componentes de RHEV
Ventajas / Beneficios de RHEV “El Mundo Real” / RHEV Casos de Éxito Próximos Pasos Now that we've looked at the virt market and how RHEV fits into it, let's look at the major components of RHEV. 10

22 USE CASE: SERVER CONSOLIDATION
Avances hacia la implementación de nube privada / híbrida Dreamworks is using RHEV for their mission critical backend systems, including Oracle Financials and other workloads. RHEV affords them high consolidation ratios, great perfomance, and virtualization management features across their Linux and Windows workloads. They are also considering RHEV as a key component of their private/hybrid cloud deployment. They use RHEV and other hypervisor technologies along with RHEL MRG for scheduling bare metal workloads, and are working with Red Hat Cloud products (currently in beta) to create a unified cloud for virtual and physical applications. 22

23 USE CASE: UNIX TO LINUX MIGRATION
Mejora sustancial de rendimiento respecto al UNIX Ahorro de costes enormes al no depender de carísimos sistemas de hardware “legacy” a sistemas “commodity”/x86 basados en RHEL/RHEV Mejor aislamiento, menjabilidad y flexibilidad Las operaciones financieras / on-line de un sistema bancario que soporta 1 millón de clientes al día Cortal Consors, a division of BNP Paribas, is one of the largest online brokers in Europe. Their Weblogic infrastructure on proprietary Sun SPARC needed to be upgraded, and the cost was going to be prohibitive. Cortal Consors chose the JBoss platform for the middleware layer, and chose JBoss on RHEL on RHEV as their architectural solution. They not only gained significant cost savings, but got the benefits of a single vendor solution without the cost and lock-in of proprietary vendors. 23

24 USE CASE: PRIVATE CLOUD SUBSTRATE
Private cloud for Linux application development and hosting Cut server provisioning time by 99% and increase productivity Decrease application development time, and time to business value Improve infrastructure uptime Flexibility Qualcomm chose RHEV as a strategic second source for virtualization. They are one of the largest VMware shops in NA, and chose RHEV as the best second source option. They have been able to accelerate their virtualization timetable by expanding the use of RHEV in the organization. They have also developed an internal private cloud deployment system using the powerful RHEV API to allow users to manage their own VMs, allowing administrators to concentrate on infrastructure. 24

25 USE CASE: VDI User experience indistinguishable from that of physical PC (multi-monitor, HD, VoIP, Video- conferencing etc.) Centralized management (security, policy enforcement, decreased downtime, provisioning time etc.) Virtual desktops are also an increasing use case for RHEV. Windows and RHEL desktops can be hosted on RHEV and presented to users using the graphically rich SPICE protocol for an end-user experience indistinguishable from physical PCs. Administrator gain centralized control over their desktop infrastructure, and unlike other solutions can mix server and desktop workloads freely in the datacenter. Where proprietary VDI solutions are often cost prohibitive, the RHEV subscription model makes VDI viable for many organizations. 25

26 USE CASE: ADW WebStudio
