4 The catalyst solution A patent protects the exact composition of the catalyst solution but the manufacturers state that it contains salts of platinum, rhodium and rhenium, the last said to improve flame propagation after ignition. More recent patents indicate compounds of other elements have been added. The system has been described as "Combustion Catalyst System" and termed CCS, though strictly speaking no elemental platinum vapour comes out of the catalyst solution in the aerosol. The aerosol dispenser This consists of a plastic container for the catalyst solution, and designed so that air bubbles pass upwards from the bottom of the solution, picking up the catalyst at the appropriate concentration. The bubbles also constantly stir the solution. At the interface between the bubble and the catalyst solution some ions of the catalyst move across from the liquid to essentially the gas phase and then on to the combustion engine combustion chamber.

5 The role of platinum The role of a platinum surface to improve and accelerate combustion processes has been much studied. In the gas phase, for a hydrocarbon to be oxidised it has to encounter an oxygen radical, an oxygen atom. Simply stated, the platinum present increases the concentration of these species and thus facilitates essentially complete combustion in the combustion chamber, effectively ensuring that unburned hydrocarbons (UHC’s) and CO levels are as low as possible. In addition, the platinum causes the flame to burn at a lower temperature and thus it does not go out before the piston has reached the end of its travel. The evidence for this is that when the flame goes out with approximately one quarter of its travel still to go the piston movement at this point changes from a push to a pull action. This produces harmonics, (rattle), particularly in a diesel engine. When CCS is installed, the harmonics are much reduced and the engine is much quieter and smoother.

6 The role of rhodium The optimum conditions for operating an engine for minimum CO and NOx emissions are somewhat limited. The higher the temperature in the combustion chamber the lower the amount of CO formed and therefore by operating the engine at as high a temperature as possible will minimise CO emissions. However, the reverse is true for the formation of NOx, and for minimum emissions, the temperature in the combustion chamber should be as low as possible. Currently, engines are tuned to be close to the crossover in the plots of CO and NOx formation as a function of temperature. The unique advantage of the CCS system is that it does not have to balance these two competing reactions. Because the platinum assists in the spark initiated oxidation process the oxidation is essentially complete, with no unburned (unoxidised) carbon monoxide, this process takes place at a lower temperature. The lower temperature regime consequently means that the amount of NOx formed is less, and this quantity is further reduced by the presence of rhodium in the combustion chamber. Another consequence is that the workload on the catalytic converter is now much reduced and so its efficiency and lifetime is extended.

7 The role of rhenium Its inclusion in the catalyst concentrate appears to result in smoother and quieter engine running and hence its role is considered to be that of making for a smoother flame burn and a smooth front to the flame as it travels and pushes the piston downwards. Further research, using engines with optical ports, could usefully confirm this, and readily enable the action and effectiveness of other or alternative additives.
