1 El pretérito de los verbos

2 El pretérito: is 1 of the 2 past tense verbs (“-ed”)
narrates a series of actions or events or outlines a specific time such as: 1. a completed action I left Lulú’s house early yesterday. 2. talks about what happened I bought a shirt and paid $15. 3. when an event began or ended in the past Last Saturday the party ended at midnight. 4. asks or state that something has already been done (“did ”) Did you study last night?

3 As with the present, the stem for regular verbs in the pretérito is the infinitive stem.
tomar tom- hablar habl- comer com- volver volv- abrir abr- escribir escrib-

4 El pretérito: Some expressions (aka ‘key words’) that are used with the pretérito are: * anoche last night * esta mañana this morning * ayer yesterday * anteayer day before yesterday * la semana pasada last week * el mes pasado last month * el año pasado last year

5 Pretérito endings for -ar verbs are:
-aste -amos -asteis -aron Now let’s practice the endings with a little something your teacher calls: ‘The clapper’ You MUST do this activity.

6 Pretérito endings for –er / -ir verbs are:
-iste -ió -imos -isteis -ieron OK, here we go again… ‘The clapper’ You MUST do this activity.

7 REMEMBER: accents on the “yo” form and the “él / ella / Ud.” form
-ar / -ir “nosotros” form is the same in present and pretérito. Also note that –ar and –er verbs NEVER EVER stem- change in the pretérito Who can give me examples of stem-changing –ar and -er verbs?

15 The “yo” form of the pretérito changes to conserve the sound of the infinitive:
