2 We conjugate verbs differently in the preterite to indicate that the action was completed in the past. A preterite verb can be translated to –ed in English.

3 “Key” words that indicate the preterite: Ayer- yesterday Anteayer- the day before yesterday Anoche- last night El año pasado- last year El mes pasado- last month La semana pasada- last week El otro día- the other day

4 To conjugate a regular AR verb in the preterite: 1. Remove the AR to form the stem. 2. Add the appropriate ending to match the subject. Yo -éNosotros -amos Tú -asteVosotros -asteis Él, ella, Usted -óEllos, Ellas, Ustedes -aron

5 Example: Hablar Yo hablé (I spoke) Tú hablaste (You spoke- informal) Él/ella habló (he/she spoke) Used habló (you spoke- formal) Nosotros hablamos (we spoke) Vosotros hablasteis (you all spoke- Spain) Ellos/Ellas hablaron (They spoke) Ustedes hablaron (You all spoke)
