Así se forma 3: The present progressive To indicate that an action that is in THIS VERY MOMENT in progress, Spanish uses estar + present participle (-ndo) It is formed similarly to the English Present Progressive: to be + -ing: Elena is studying (right now, at this very second.) Spanish: estar + -ndo (present participle) : Elena está estudiando. estar (to be) present participle (yo) estoy (tú) estás estudiando comiendo escribiendo (usted, él/ ella) está (nosotros/as) estamos (ustedes, ellos/as) están

It’s like the English: to be + -ing (present participle) Spanish: estar + -ndo (present participle) Elena está estudiando para un examen. Ana está comiendo galletas. stem ending = present participle -ar verbs estudiar -er verbs comer -ir verbs escribir -ando estudiando -iendo comiendo -iendo escribiendo

5 Así se forma 3: The present progressive
As for the use of the Spanish present progressive, it emphasizes ONLY an action CURRENTLY in progress at a particular time. Estoy trabajando ahora. I am working right now. (act in progress) ¿Están ustedes todavía comiendo? Are you all still (in the middle of) eating? Unlike English, the present progressive is NOT used to talk about habitual and repeated actions, NOR is it used to talk about the future. He is working with his father Trabaja con su padre. I am leaving in an hour. Salgo en una hora. Estoy saliendo en una hora.

Stem-changing "Ir" verbs continue to stem-change in the participle with a small difference: O-->UE stem-changers change from O--> U E-->IE and E-->I stem-changers both change from E->I. Decir (i,i) diciendo Dormir (ue,u) durmiendo Pedir (i,i)  pidiendo

9 Los verbos de -Er/-Ir ending in two vowels
Yip! Los verbos de -Er/-Ir ending in two vowels ARF! will replace the weak (poodle) “i“ with a (german shepherd) “y" in the participle. Remember: Spanish doesn’t permit three vowels in a row with an unaccented “i” in the middle! Yip! No! Leer  leiendo leyendo (see?) Oír  oyendo (easy!) Creer  [to believe] creyendo Caer [to Fall] cayendo (ok, you've got it!)

Uses of ser (IDENTITY) to identify who or what the subject is (vocation, profession, religion...) Alex es estudiante de la Universidad de Texas. to indicate origin (where the subject is from) and nationality Es de Puerto Rico. Es puertorriqueño. to express TIME (hour, day, date, season…) This includes EVENTS which take place. Son las nueve de la mañana. Es ocho de abril. Es lunes. Es primavera. La clase es en la universidad. La fiesta es en mi casa. to indicate possession La raqueta es de Susana. Uses of estar State of Being: emotional, physical, mental, civil, motion Ubicación: Location! to indicate the physical location of any person, thing or place (NOT events) Su familia está en Puerto Rico y Alex los visita en las vacaciones. (present progresive): estar + -ando/-iendo to indicate an action in progress Está jugando al tenis ahora.

Ser + adjective (IDENTITY) to indicate what the subject is like (inherent to the person, place, or thing) Es alto, moreno, simpático y muy inteligente. Therefore, ser is the only option with adjectives that can only express inherent qualities Santiago es inteligente y trabajador. Santiago está inteligente y trabajador. Estar + adjective to indicate a STATE of being: the physical, mental or emotional state Ella está un poco enferma. Estar is the only option with adjectives that can only express emotions and other states of being Santiago está bien/ mal/ cansado, contento. Santiago es bien/ mal/ cansado, contento.
