5 Benefits of Parent Engagement:  Students gain:  Higher grades and test scores  Better attendance and more homework done  More positive attitudes and behavior  Higher graduation rates  Greater enrollment in post-secondary education  Parents gain:  More confidence in the school  More self confidence  More likely to continue their own education

8 Parent Volunteer Policy/La póliza de los padres voluntarios: Each family is expected to volunteer 40-hours per school year. 9 Research shows/Los estudios demuestran:  Children who want to please their parents tend to do better in school.  The desire to please their parents declines during early adolescence.  When parents a have positive relationship with their child, provide guidance, set limits and high expectations, students are more likely to do better academically.  Parents have the power to motivate their children!  Los niños que quieren complacer a sus padres tienen éxito en la escuela.  El deseo de complacer a sus padres disminuye durante la adolescencia.  Cuando los padres tienen una relación positiva con su hijo/a, dan consejos, establecen los límites y altas expectativas, los estudiantes tienen más probabilidades de tener éxito escolar.  ¡Los padres tienen el poder de motivar a sus hijos!

11 Understanding Your Child & Their Needs: 1. Find out what is DIFFICULT for your child. (Be an astute listener; refrain from giving advice.) 2. Talk to your child about their INTERESTS. Help them make the connection between what they like to do and the benefits of doing well in school. 3. Give your child clear expectations about studying and homework. (Structure and rules.) 4. Help your child establish GOALS and provide INCENTIVES. (Short-term and long- term) 5. Help your child get ORGANIZED. 6. Be patient and give your child a lot of REASSURANCE. (Consult a qualified professional if you have concerns about your child’s medical or emotional condition.) 7. As your child gets older, help your child develop independence and take RESPONSIBILITY for their own learning.

Talk to your neighbor and identify ways to help your child with homework and with studying. 3. Report out. Instrucciones : 1. Revisar el documento 2. 15 Homework Tips: 1. Make homework completion a positive experience. 2. Create the ideal homework center by designating a specific area in your home for completing homework and for studying. 3. Ask your child to identify the school supplies he/she will need to do their homework. 4. Talk to your child about the importance of homework. 5. Establish a homework routine by setting a time for doing homework and studying each day.

16 Homework Tips: 6. Help your child manage their time wisely. 7. Ask your child to explain the homework assignment and the skills and knowledge they are acquiring. 8. Set a good example and do your homework. 9. Review completed homework assignments. 10. Stay informed.

17 Ayudando a su hijo/a con la tarea: 1. Haga que el proceso de hacer la tarea sea una experiencia positiva. 2. 19 What if my child doesn’t enjoy school?/¿Qué pasa si mi hijo/a no le gusta la escuela? / 1. Talk to your child and find out what it is about school they don’t like. Don’t assume the problem is academic Listen carefully to your child before you offer any solutions 2. Find out what your child does enjoy about school. 3. Remind your child that education involves effort and requires perseverance and fortitude. 1. Hable con su hijo/a para saber cuál es el problema.  No asuma que el problema es académico.  Escuche cuidadosamente a su hijo/a antes de ofrecer una solución 2. Averigüe lo que su hijo/a no goza de la escuela. 3. Recuérdele a su hijo que la educación implica esfuerzo y requiere perseverancia y fortaleza.

20 What should I do if my child is having trouble in school? /Qué debo hacer si mi hijo/a tiene problemas en la escuela?  Seek the help of your child’s teachers (teachers are your child’s first line of defense).  Ask your child’s teachers for specific activities you can do at home.  Take advantage of school resources (tutoring, counseling services, afterschool programs)  Maintain constant communication with the school until the problem is resolved.  Busque la ayuda de los maestros de su hijo/a (los maestros son la primera línea de la defensa para sus hijos).  Pregunte a los maestros de su hijo/a para actividades específicas que puedes hacer en casa.  Aproveche de los servicios en la escuela (tutorías, servicios de asesoramiento, programas después de clases)  Mantenga la comunicación constante con la escuela hasta que se resuelva la problema.

21 Homework/Tarea – Option I Letter Writing Exercise: Directions: Write a letter to your child describing how you intend to help them succeed academically. Instrucciones: Escribe una carta a su hijo/a que describe cómo te prepones ayudarle a tener éxito académico.

22 Sample Letter: October 12, 2011 Dear Son: I love you so very much and I am so proud of all of your accomplishments. I cannot wait until you graduate from high school and go to college. You are going to be the first one in our family to go to college and you have my unconditional support and love. I promise that I am going to help you reach your goals. This is what I am going to do: 1. Make sure you have school supplies 2. Make time every day to talk with you about what you are learning in school 3. Volunteer at school 4. Attend parent workshops 5. Meet with your teachers regularly……………… Sincerely, Mom

23 Homework/Tarea – Option II Study Box: Directions: Secure a box large enough to store your child’s school supplies, books and backpack. Decorate the box using whatever you have available at home. Instrucciones: Busca una caja lo suficientemente grande para los útiles escolares, los libros y la mochila de su estudiante. Decora la caja utilizando todo lo que tiene disponible en su casa.
