2 Stem-Changing Verbs What is a stem changing verb?
Remember that a verb has two parts: 1) the stem 2) the “ar”/”er”/”ir” ending. Example: Escribir – to write (cross out the ending “er” and what is left is the stem. escribir Stem = escrib ir = ending In a stem changing verb, the stem changes though the endings follow the regular “ar”/”er”/or “ir” pattern.

3 Stem-Changing Verbs There are 4 different types of stem changing verbs: e-ie stem changers e – i stem changers o-ue stem changers u – ue stem changers Let’s take a look at e-ie stem changers and how to conjugate them: Entender = to understand. It is an e-ie stem changing verb. It also has the endings for “er” verbs.

4 We’ll use perder, to lose, as an example of this type.

5 Here are some common e  ie verbs:
empezar, comenzar to begin pensar (+ infinitive) to think; to plan (to do something) perder to lose preferir to prefer querer to want, to love

6 An e  ie verb we already know:
nevar to snow We know ‘nieva’ which means ‘it snows.’ There is only one conjugation for nevar.

7 tener tengo tienes tiene tenemos tienen Tengo exámenes mañana.
The verb tener is what might be called partial stem-changing verbs; the yo forms do not have the stem change, but they do have an irregularity. tengo tienes tiene tenemos tienen Tengo exámenes mañana. I have exams tomorrow.

8 The verbs querer and preferir
Expressing desires and preferences Querer and preferir are important stem-changing verbs that have multiple uses.

9 When used with a thing as the direct object, querer means to want.
quiero quieres quiere queremos quieren When used with a thing as the direct object, querer means to want.

10 ¿Quiere un sándwich de pollo?
Sí, y quiero papas fritas también, por favor.

11 Preferir, of course, means to prefer.
prefiero prefieres prefiere preferimos prefieren Preferir, of course, means to prefer.

12 ¿Quiere un sándwich de pollo?
No señor, prefiero una hamburguesa.

13 Both querer and preferir can be used with an infinitive directly after them
We start with an appropriate person and number of querer or preferir . . . and then add any infinitive. estudiar estudiar leer quiero queremos escribir comer quieres queréis viajar aprender quiere quieren bailar dormir Rafael quiere esquiar, pero su novia prefiere patinar. Rafael wants to ski, but his girlfriend prefers to skate.

15 Pensar basically means “to think.”
Thinking and planning Pensar basically means “to think.” Me gusta ir al parque para pensar y descansar. I like to go to the park to think and rest.

16 Pensar also has a special use . . .
Thinking and planning Pensar also has a special use . . . + = pensar infinitive to plan to do something Pensamos escuchar música en el parque esta tarde. We’re planning to listen to music in the park this afternoon.

17 We’ll use jugar, to play a sport. This is the only u—ue verb.

18 Práctica Yo ______ comer pollo y arroz. (querer)
