2 Stem-Changing Verbs Remember that all verbs have two parts in Spanish, the stem and the ending. Some verbs, like jugar, require a change in the stem before you can add the endings.

3 Stem-Changing Verbs Jugar is an example of a stem-changing verb.
In order to conjugate this verb, the u in the stem changes to ue in all forms except nosotros and vosotros. Jugar: juego, juegas, juega, juegan.

4 Poder y dormir Like jugar, the verbs poder and dormir are also stem-changing verbs. These verbs have an o to ue stem change in all forms except nosotros and vosotros.

5 El verbo poder The verb poder is a “boot” or “shoe” verb that means “can” or “to be able to” do something. The stem pod and the ending er make up the verb poder.

To conjugate poder, you must change the o in the stem to ue: POD  PUED Then, add the regular endings for present tense ER verbs: o, es, e, emos, éis, en

Do not stem-change the nosotros or vosotros forms.

9 El verbo poder When the forms of poder are followed by another verb, the second verb is always an infinitive. Remember, you can never have two conjugated verbs in a row!

10 El verbo poder ¿Puedes ir a la fiesta conmigo? No, no puedo.
Can you go to the party with me? Are you able to go to the party with me? No, no puedo. No, I cannot. No, I am not able to.

11 El verbo dormir The verb dormir is a “boot” or “shoe” verb that means “to sleep.” The stem dorm and the ending ir make up the verb dormir.

16 Repaso: poder y dormir Nosotros dormimos cada noche.
¿A qué hora vas a dormir? (Remember ir + a + infinitivo?) Yo duermo a las diez cada noche. El gato duerme por dieciocho horas todos los días. Uds. duermen todas las noches, ¿verdad? Me gusta dormir muy tarde los sábado.
