4 Matthew 13:44 - 46 44 Jesus said to his disciples: The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure buried in a field, which a person finds and hides again, and out of joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.

7 Reflections on Matthew 13:44 - 46 Reflexiónes en Mateo 13:44 - 46 by Fr. Sam Rosales, S.J. July 30, 2008 How does one find the treasure hidden in a field, or the pearl of great price? In other words, how do you find Jesus? You could say it is at a moment of conversion. It is a grace of God. It is an illumination, an inspired moment. Today we will speak about that beautiful experience, because a moment of conversion leads to many changes.

8 ¿Cómo se encuentra al tesoro escondido, o a la perla de gran valor? En otras palabras ¿Cómo se encuentra a Jesús? Se podría decir que es en un momento de conversión. Es una gracia de Dios. Es una iluminación, un momento inspirado. Hoy queremos hablar de esa bellísima experiencia, porque un momento de conversión cambia muchas cosas.

9 Allow me to share one of my sources. In The Economist for July 26 th, 2008, p. 29 ff., I found an article called The Moment of Truth. It spoke of conversion having to do with the mystery of God. It is beyond human understanding. It is a moment when everything falls into place. It is something as close as the jugular vein. I quote:

10 Permítanme compartir una de mis fuentes de información. En el magazín The Economist, del día 26 de Julio de 2008, p. 29 ff. Encontré un articulo llamado Momento de Verdad. Habla de la conversión al tratar del misterio de Dios. Es mas de lo que se puede comprender completamente. Es un momento cuando todo cae en su lugar. Es algo tan cerca como la vena yugular. Cito:

11 Sometimes conversion is gradual, but quite commonly things come to a head in a single instant, which can be triggered by a text, an image, a ceremony or some private realization. A religious person would call such a moment a summons from God; a psychologist might speak of an instant when the walls between the conscious and unconscious break down, perhaps because an external stimulus-words, a picture, a rite-connect with something very deep inside.

12 A veces la conversión es gradual, pero muy de seguido es cuando las cosas llegan a un punto de comprensión instantánea. El gatillo para todo esto puede ser un texto, una imagen, una ceremonia, o una realización privada. Una persona religiosa le llamaría a tal momento como una llamada de Dios; un psicólogo podría hablar de un instante cuando las paredes entre lo consciente y lo inconsciente se tumban. Quizás pueda ser una palabra externa que estimula, o un retrato, o un rito que se conecta con algo muy profundo dentro de sí.

13 For people of an artistic bent, the catalyst is often a religious image, which serves as a window into a new reality. One recurring theme in conversion stories is that cultural forms which are, on the face of it, foreign to the convert somehow feel familiar, like a homecoming. That, the convert feels, is what I have always believed without being fully aware of it. (This article reminded me of many things).

14 Para personas que son artísticas, el catalizador [lo que hace comenzar todo] frecuentemente es una imagen religiosa que sirve como una ventana a la nueva realidad. Un tema que ocurre de seguido en historias de conversión es que hay formas culturales que son, al mirarlas, extrañas al que se convierte, pero de alguna manera se sienten familiares. Es como sentirse en casa. El que se convierte siente: Eso es lo que yo siempre he creído sin estar enteramente consciente de ello. (Este articulo me ayudo a recordar muchas cosas).

15 Conversion can be referred to as an: Aha moment. You just know something very profoundly and thoroughly. Things suddenly make a lot of sense. It is like water when it reaches a certain temperature becoming ice, or steam. You can also say that it is like the moment when some chemicals crystallize. Or they change from a solid to a liquid, or from a liquid to a gas.

16 La conversión es un momento de AHA. Es el momento en que te das cuenta de algo muy a profundas. A ese momento todo tiene sentido. Es como cuando el agua llega cierto temperatura y se hace hielo, o vapor. También se puede decir que es como el momento en que ciertas químicas se cristalizan. O Se cambian de sólido a liquido, o de liquido a gas.

17 Conversion happens when you begin to say: The old stuff just wont do any more! or I have to start doing something different, better. Maybe you say, Why hadnt I thought of that before? I was blind, but now I see! I understand! Wow! St. Ignatius spoke of a gift of understanding he received on the River Cardoner, in Spain. He says he understood more than he had ever understood before in his life, and ever after.

18 Una conversión sucede cuando comienzas a decir: Lo de antes ya no me sirve para nada. O Tengo que comenzar hacer algo diferente, mejor. Quizás digas: ¿Porqué no me había dado cuenta de esto? Estaba ciego, y ahora veo. ¡Ahora si comprendo! San Ignacio Loyola menciona un momento cuando le llegó el don de comprender todas las cosas al estar al lado del Río Cardoner, en España. Dijo que había comprendido más en ese momento que en toda su vida anterior, y después.

19 I heard once that a kittie-cat, when born, is born blind. If you put a bandage on his eyes for the first thirty days of his life, he will be blind from then on. But if you let it be, in thirty days it will begin to see. And it will see for the rest of its life. Those first thirty days are crucial. Meanwhile it has to trust in its mother to provide all it needs for the time being.

20 Una vez oí que un gatito nace ciego. Si le pones una venda en sus ojos por treinta días quedara ciego para siempre. Pero si lo dejas crecer normalmente, en treinta días él comienza a ver. Los primeros días son muy importantes. Mientras tanto él tiene que depender de su madre para que le provea todo lo que necesita.

21 Likewise, in real life, we have a formation stage. They say the earlier the more crucial. First impressions are so important. Montessori Programs start as early as two year of age. Upward Bound Programs start at four. If you wait till kindergarten you have lost precious time. Many habits are already established. In the sandbox you learn a lot of stuff, right from wrong, pecking order, how to relate, how to talk, etc.

22 Igualmente, en la vida tenemos una etapa donde se forma la persona. Dicen que entre mas temprano más importante. Hay programas de escuela (llamados Montessori) que hoy comienzan a la edad de dos años. Hay otros llamados Upward Bound que comienzan a la edad de cuatro años. Si te esperas hasta el kinder (edad 6 o 7) ya perdiste mucho tiempo. Muchos hábitos se aprenden en esos años que perduran toda la vida. Cosas como distinguir entre el bien y el mal; saber como tratar a otros, como hablar, etc.

23 In the same way, in the spiritual life there is a beginners stage. Then you advance to the second purgative stage. And finally a third stage, called the stage of union with God. Teresa of Avila called the stages mansions. Tomas Merton speaks of a seven-story mountain. In any event, there is progress from A to Z. And Christ is the Alpha and Omega, present in all the stages.

24 Igualmente en la vida espiritual. Se puede decir de diferentes maneras. Antes se decía que había tres etapas: comienzo, purgativo y unitivo. Teresa de Ávila habla de mansiones. Tomas Merton habla de 7 pisos en una montaña. De cualquier manera hay progreso de la A hasta la Z. Y Cristo es el Alpha y el Omega, en todas las etapas, allí esta Él,

25 Jesus is the Treasure Hidden in a Field, he is the Pearl of Great Price. It really helps to be able to know what to do to advance from one stage to another, because the closer you are to God the happier you will be. You will be Blessed! and full of overwhelming joy!

26 Jesús es el Tesoro escondido, él es la Perla de Gran Valor. Ayuda mucho saber que hacer para avanzar de una etapa a otra, para que encuentres al Tesoro o a la Perla. Lo mas cercas estés a Jesús lo más feliz serás. ¡Serás Bienaventurado! ¡Estarás lleno de gozo!

27 Every disciple / student in any field needs a master / teacher. Discipline is called for. If you dont listen you will not learn as much. You dont have to invent the wheel all over again. It has already been invented. All you need to do is humble yourself and learn from others that have come before you, or from someone that knows something you dont know. Fr. Rahm used to say: Be like the bumble bee that goes around looking for honey from all kinds of flowers.

28 Todo discípulo / estudiante en cualquier rama de aprendizaje necesita una persona que le enseñe: el maestro. Se necesita disciplina. Si no haces caso, no aprendes nada. No tienes que inventar la rueda, ya esta inventada. Todo lo que necesitas es humillarte y aprender de otros, los Maestros, que han venido antes que tú, y saben mas que tú. El Padre Rahm decía: Hay que ser como la abeja que va de flor a flor buscando la miel. Así es. ¡Gracias Padre Rahm!

29 In short, Jesus is the treasure hidden in a field, he is the pearl of great price. Pray for the moment of conversion, that you may be ready and alert and not be asleep when He visits you. He is the Master. He will lead you to the Kingdom. Work on awareness. The kingdom of heaven is close at hand, and so is Jesus the King. Seek and you shall find!

30 En fin, Jesús es el Tesoro escondido en un campo, Él es la Perla de Gran Valor. Reza por el momento de conversión: que estes listo y alerta y no te duermas cuando Él te visite. Él es el Maestro. El te mostrara como entrar al Reino. El Reino de los cielos esta cerca, y también su Rey, Jesucristo. Búscalo ¡ y lo encontraras !
