1 Mateo 15: 21 En aquel tiempo, Jesús se retiró a la comarca de Tiro y Sidón. 22 Entonces una mujer cananea le salió al encuentro y se puso a gritar: “Señor, hijo de David, ten compasión de mí. Mi hija está terriblemente atormentada por un demonio”. 23 Jesús no le contestó una sola palabra; pero los discípulos se acercaron y le rogaban: “Atiéndela, porque viene gritando detrás de nosotros”.

2 24 Él les contestó: “Yo no he sido enviado sino a las ovejas descarriadas de la casa de Israel”.
25 Ella se acercó entonces a Jesús, y postrada ante él, le dijo: “¡Señor, ayúdame!” 26 Él le respondió: “No está bien quitarles el pan a los hijos para echárselo a los perritos”. 27 Pero ella replicó: “Es cierto, Señor; pero también los perritos se comen las migajas que caen de la mesa de sus amos”.

3 28 Entonces Jesús le respondió: “Mujer, ¡qué grande es tu fe

My daughter is tormented by a demon.” 23 But he did not say a word in answer to her. His disciples came and asked him, “Send her away, for she keeps calling out after us.”

6 24 He said in reply, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”
25 But the woman came and did him homage, saying, “Lord, help me.” 26 He said in reply, “It is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs.” 27 She said, “Please, Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from the table of their masters.”

Reflexiones en Mateo : by Fr. Sam Rosales, S.J Aug. 14, 2011 Today the Canaanite woman teaches us much about the need to have faith and to be persistent whenever we make petitions to the Lord. La mujer cananea tiene mucho que enseñarnos acerca de la necesidad de tener fe y ser persistente al hacer peticiones al Señor.

10 This reminds me of the saying: “If at first you don’t succeed, try again, and again, and again.” That is called being “persistent.” Esto me recuerda del dicho que dice: “Si al principio no tienes éxito, haz la lucha otra vez mas, y otra vez más, y otra vez más.” Eso se llama ser “persistente.”

11 In the things of God, as in everything, always aim for an “A” for effort! “Strive mightily, to enter by the narrow gate…” says the Lord (Luke 13:24). To strive means to try very hard. En las cosas de Dios, como en todo, hay que siempre tratar de tener buenos grados: Un “10” por esfuerzo. “Esfuércense, para entrar por la puerta angosta” dice el Señor (Lucas 13:24). Esforzarse quiere decir luchar con gran esfuerzo.

She did not give up ! “Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David! (Matthew 15:22). Se me ocurrio que esta mujer ha de haber tenido un gran amor por su hija. Esto fue lo que la impulso para hacer el super esfuerzo. Noten bien como oró. ¡Pidió a grito alto! ¡Clamó! ¡No se desanimo! “¡Ten compasión de mí, Señor!” (Mateo 15:22).

13 This shows what parents ought to do for their children, even when they are tormented by demons. The woman said: “My daughter is terribly troubled by a demon.” Today one cannot but wonder why parents, instead of leading their children to Jesus, permit their children to do anything they want, even if it makes them vulnerable to the devil. (For example, they wear T-Shirts with diabolical dragons on them and tattoos that are diabolical; They watch Porno, X-rated movies and X-rated TV; They do not go to church, etc.).

14 Esto indica lo que padres de familia deben de hacer por sus hijos, aunque estén atormentados por el demonio. La mujer dice: “Mi hija esta terriblemente atormentada por un demonio.” Hoy en día a veces tiene uno que preguntar porqué padres de familia, en vez de dirigir a sus hijos a Jesús, permiten a sus hijos hacer lo que les da la gana, hasta cuando los hace vulnerables al demonio. (Por ejemplo, usan camisetas llenas de dragones diabolicos, tatuajes diabólicas; ven pornografía, películas XXX y TV XXX; no van a la Iglesia, etc.).

It is interesting that Jesus at first did not answer a word. The disciples go to Jesus and beg him “Send her away, for she is crying after us.” Jesus then says: “I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.” Note that the purpose of Matthew in writing his gospel was to show the Jews that the New Testament was a fulfillment of the Old Testament.

Why did Jesus change his mind and l listen to the Canaanite woman? It was because of her indomitable character that did not give up. She possessed one of those qualities Jesus in other places encourages. She had persistence. She reveals her conviction that it is from Jesus of Nazareth, the Jewish Messiah, that salvation was to come. She reveals this when she agrees with him that the “children” have to be fed first. She had great faith.

Ella tenia persistencia. Ella manifiesta su convicción que Jesús de Nazaret era el Mesías Judío, por quien iba a venir la salvación. Ella revela esto cuando esta de acuerdo con El que los “hijos” tienen que comer primero. Ella tenia gran fe.

21 In the light of all this Jesus makes an exception and grants her desire, healing her daughter at a distance. She was united to him not by blood but by the spirit, by her internal bond of faith. In another place, Jesus said faith could move mountains (Mark 11:22; Mathew 17:20, and Luke 17:6). In this case her faith moves him.

22 En luz de todo esto, Jesús hace una excepción y le concede su deseo, sanando a su hija a la distancia. Ella estaba unida a Él no por sangre, sino por espíritu, atada por su fe interna. 23 Jesus wanted to hear her out, not to get rid of her, (like the apostles). He was moved by her sincerity. She was “without wax” (sincere). She was solid in her petition. She was firm, and would not give up. Let us pray for the grace to imitate her example. Jesús quería escucharla, no eliminarla, (como los apostoles). El se conmovió con su sinceridad. Ella era “sin cera” (sincera). Su petición era sólida. Fue firme, y no se desanimo. Oremos por la gracia de imitar su buen ejemplo.

24 Also, remember that St. Paul says the gift of faith is not bestowed on the half-hearted (1 Corinthians 13:2). The Canaanite woman believed with all her heart. That is why Jesus listened to her. She was already practicing the first Commandment: “Thou shall love the Lord your God with all your heart”. So Jesus knew that God had already given her the grace to approach him with her petition. As with St. Peter when he professed faith in Jesus as the Messiah, this woman had the same quality of greatness in her faith. Jesus always rewarded faith lavishly. She also showed a lot of humility, and courage. How could he turn her away?

25 También, hay que recordar que san Pablo dice (1 Corintios 13:2), que el don de la fe no es concedido a los que no están entregados totalmente. La mujer Cananea creyó con todo su corazón. Por eso es que Jesús le hizo caso. Ella ya estaba practicando el Primer Mandamiento: “Amaras a Dios con todo tu corazón”. Jesús por eso sabia que Dios le había concedido la gracia de aprontarse ante el con su petición. Cuando San Pedro profeso su gran fe en Jesús como Mesías, así la mujer Cananea profeso su gran fe. Jesús la reconoció y le premio su fe copiosamente. Además, mostró mucha humildad, y valor. ¿Cómo podía hacerla menos?

26 ‘Go to this people, and say,
We know that St. Paul also had growth and development in his knowledge of what God wanted. He began preaching from synagogue to synagogue. But everywhere the Jews rejected him. Finally in Acts of the Apostles 28:25 he said: “The Holy Spirit was right in saying to your fathers through the prophet: ‘Go to this people, and say, You shall indeed see but never perceive. For this people’s heart has grown dull And their ears are heavy of hearing, And their eyes they have closed, Lest they should perceive with their eyes, And hear with their ears, And understand with their heart, And turn for me to heal them.’ Let it be known to you then that the salvation of God has been sent to the Gentiles; they will listen.”

27 Sabemos que San Pablo también tuvo crecimiento y desarrollo en su conocimiento de lo que Dios quería. . Comenzó predicando de sinagoga a sinagoga. Pero en todo lugar fue rechazado por los judíos. 28 In the Book of Ephesians 3:1-6 he says: “For this reason I, Paul, a prisoner for Christ Jesus on behalf of you Gentiles—assuming that you have heard of the stewardship of God’s grace that was given to me for you, how the misery was made known to me by revelation, as I have written briefly. When you read this you can perceive my insight into the mystery of Christ, which was not made known to the sons of men in other generations as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit; that is, how the Gentiles are fellow heirs, members of the same body, and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.

30 “Put on the mind of Christ” says St. Paul (Philippians 2:5)
“Put on the mind of Christ” says St. Paul (Philippians 2:5). We need to be humble and gentle of heart when dealing with those who have differing opinions with regard to faith matters. We need to listen with the compassion of Christ. We need to be flexible and be inclusive, rather than exclusive. Jesus and St. Paul started being exclusive, thinking they came only for the Jews, but with the grace of our heavenly Father, became inclusive, including the pagans in the God’s plan for salvation. They realized God the Father wanted them to include the Gentles, and not exclude them. Thank God for that! Let us do the same!

31 “Pónganse la mente de Cristo” dice San Pablo (Filipenses 2:5) Necesitamos ser mansos y humildes de corazón al tratar con aquellos que tienen diferentes opiniones acerca de cosas de la fe. Necesitamos escuchar con la compasión de Cristo. Necesitamos ser flexibles y ser inclusivos, y no exclusivo. Jesús y San Pablo comenzaron siendo exclusivos, pensando que solo venían por los judíos, pero se dieron cuenta, con la gracia de nuestro Padre celestial, hacerse inclusivos, incluyendo a los paganos en el plan de salvación de Dios. Se dieron cuenta que Dios Padre quería que incluyeran a los Gentiles, y no excluirlos. ¡Gracias a Dios por esto! ¡Vamos a hacer lo mismo!
