2 Negative/Affirmative
Here are some affirmative and negative words that you already know. Remember they are ANTONYMS.

3 We make a sentence negative by adding NO before the verb.
Hay libros. NO hay libros.

4 Affirmative Alguien someone Algo something Siempre always También also

5 Ejemplo Alguien siempre encuentra algo.
Somebody always finds something.

6 Ejemplo Yo siempre encuentro algo, también.
I always find something, too/also.

7 These are pronouns. They can stand alone.
Alguno someone Alguna Algunos some Algunas

8 Pay attention to the difference!
Algunos some Unos a few Algunas Unas ¿Hay algunas tiendas cerca de aquí? Are there some stores near here? Sí, hay unas Sí, hay algunas. Yes, there are a few. Yes, there are some.

9 Ejemplo Hay café. ¿Quieres alguno? There is coffee. Do you want some?

10 Ejemplo ¿Quedan galletas? Are there any cookies left? Sí, hay algunas.
Yes, there are some.

11 These are adjectives. They must go before a noun.
Algún (chico)*Notice the difference. Alguna (chica) some + noun Algunos (chicos) Algunas (chicas)

12 Ejemplo ¿Hay alguno en la biblioteca? Is anyone in the library?
Sí, hay alguna chica estudiando. Yes, there is some girl studying.

13 Ejemplo ¿Tienes colores? Do have colors? Sí, tengo algunos nuevos.
Yes, I have some new ones.

14 Negative Words Nadie nobody, no one Nada nothing

15 Ejemplo Nadie sabe nada de eso.
Nobody knows anything (nothing) about that. Rule: One negative requires ALL NEGATIVES in the sentence!

16 These are pronouns. They can stand alone.
Ninguno None, Ninguna Not one, Ningunos not any Ningunas

17 ¿Hay un espacio para esto?
Is there a space for this? Sí, hay alguno. There there is some.

18 These are adjectives. They must go before a noun.
Ningún (chico) Ninguna (chica) Not one + noun Ningunos (chicos) not any + nouns Ningunas (chicas)

19 Ejemplo Ningunos problemas de matemáticas son difíciles para mí.
Not any math problems are difficult for me.

20 Ejemplo A ningún hombre le gusta lavar los platos.
Not one man likes to wash the dishes.

21 Remember! Only in the adjective form
Algún (some) and ningún (none) are always written with an accent. These masculine, singulars drop the o and get an accent.

22 Ejemplo Algún día, voy a ser famoso. Someday I will be famous.

23 Ella también lo recuerda.
She also remembers it. ¿Alguien cumplió años? Someone completed years/had a birthday?

24 ¿Se repartió algo? Was something passed out?

25 ¿Siempre vas a la panadería?
Ejemplo ¿Siempre vas a la panadería? Do you always go to the bakery/breadstore?

26 Negative words can be used two ways.
Negative words may come before or after the verb. But if they come after, we must use no before the verb.

27 Negative Constructions
Nadie fue a la reunión. No fue nadie a la reunión. Both mean, “Nobody went to the meeting.”

28 Negative Constructions
Nunca llora. No llora nunca. Both mean, “S/he never cries.”

29 Remember the before and after rule for negatives:
Ninguno de ellos se quitó el abrigo. (before O.K.) No se quitó el abrigo ninguno de ellos. (if after, must use NO before.) Both mean, “None of them took off their coats.”

30 Remember! Whenever you have adjectives, they must match the nouns in gender and number.
