2 P RETERITE T ENSE VERBS Use the preterite tense when you are talking about actions or events that were completed in the past. Form the preterite tense of a regular –AR verb by removing –AR from the infinitive and attaching the appropriate ending.

13 -IR STEM CHANGING VERBS PG. 17 Stem changes that occur in the present tense for –AR and –ER verbs do not occur in the preterite tense. However, -IR verbs that have stem changes in the present tense require a different stem change in the preterite tense. 23 M ORE S PELLING CHANGES The verbs creer, leer, and oír have an i between two vowels which changes to a y. i y These verbs also require additional accent marks to separate vowel sounds and to indicate how these words are pronounced. This spelling change occurs in the Ud., él, ella, Uds., ellos, ellas forms. leíleímos leísteleísteis leyóleyeron
