1 Essential ?: How do I conjugate this irregular verb and how is it used?

2  This verb mean “to have.”  It is an irregular verb ◦ It is two types of irregular verbs you will learn about this semester  Yo-go verbs (because the yo form ends in go)  Stem-changing verbs (because there is a spelling change in the stem of the verb)

3  Yo tengo  Tú tienes  Él/ella/Ud. tiene  Nosotros tenemos  Ellos/ellas/Uds. tienen

4  Notice the irregularities: ◦ Yo tengo ◦ Tú tienes ◦ Él/ella/Ud. tiene ◦ Nosotros tenemos ◦ Ellos/ellas/Uds. Tienen  What are the changes?  Which form doesn’t change?

6  The easiest way to use tener is for “to have” ◦ Tengo seis clases. ◦ ¿Cuántas clases tienes? ◦ Tengo una familia grande. ◦ Mi esposa y yo tenemos cuatro hijos.  You also use it when you express age ◦ Tengo 36 años. ◦ Mi hija tiene 13 años. ◦ ¿Cuántos años tienes? ◦ ¿Cuántos años tiene tu hermano?

7  You also use tener to say what you and others “have to” do ◦ Conjugate tener, add “que” and then the infinitive of the verb that has to be done.  Los alumnos tienen que estudiar.  Mi hermano tiene que leer un libro.  Yo tengo que trabajar mucho.  ¿Qué tienes que hacer?
