14 Pure Substances Pure substances are anything that is made of only one type of atom or molecule. 2 types: elements & compounds

15 Elements Elements: Substance that is made of only one type of atom. Example: atoms of gold (Au)

16 Compounds Compounds: Substance that is made of only one type of molecule. Example: molecules of water (H 2 O)

17 What are Mixtures? Pure Substances = elements and compounds Mixtures are everything else. Formed when different types and amounts of elements or compounds are physically stirred or mixed together. Can be separated with physical changes. They never have a chemical formula or recipe. Sometimes you can see the different ingredients in a mixture, but sometimes you cannot.
