7 Direct Objects The Direct Object of a verb is the thing being acted upon aka the receiver of the action. The Direct Object answers the question “what?” or “whom?” with regard to what the subject of the sentence is doing. What is the Direct Object in the following sentences? She kicked me. (Whom did she kick?) The teacher spoke to you. (With whom did she speak?) I play the guitar. (What did you play?) The crowd will cheer us. (Who did they cheer?) We flew the kites. (What did we fly?)

8 Direct Object Pronouns
Direct Object Pronouns (DOPs) are used when you don’t want to keep repeating direct objects. In English, it’s discouraged to keep repeating direct objects– see below. I pick up the book. I look at the book and decide to buy the book. VS. I pick up the book. I look at it and decide to buy it. Paul bought flowers. He took the flowers home and gave the flowers to his wife. Paul bought flowers. He took them home and gave them to his wife.

In Spanish, the Direct Object Pronoun comes before the verb. UNLESS… It follows an infinitive verb. Ex: Las quiero sacar Quiero sacarlas. It follows the –ndo form (progressive form). Ex: Lo estamos llamando.  Estamos llamándolo. It follows a command. Ex: Haz la mesa.  Hazla. Ex: Mezcla los ingredientes. Mezclalos. Ex: Pon el pollo en el horno. Ponlo en el horno.
