1 Estrellita

Share a childhood memory of a special reading experience. Comparta una memoria de la niñez de una experiencia especial de la lectura.

4 ¿Qué es Estrellita? It is an accelerated, systematic, & explicit phonics program It is the key to unlocking decoding skills for beginning readers. Estrellita is organized by Sonidos and Blending (which includes: sílaba, palabra y oracion.)

It will seem very skilled base, but its our job of thinking Globally. We need to be mindful of helping children make connections Phonics skills should be tied into meaningful language experiences (relevant, not decontextualized) Encourage your child to make connections in other contexts ie. Sonidos iniciales- used in children’s names, signs, home objects, stories, poems (locate words that begin with a certain sound, draw pictures of words that begin with a specific sound) Cuando lleguen sus hijos con tareas de lectura de Estrellita Las habilidades de la lectura fonética de Estrellita se deben atar con las experiencias Anime a su hijo/a a hacer conexiones en otros contextos ie. Sonidos iniciales: usado en los nombres de los niños, anuncios, ojbjetos de la casa, en cuentos, poemas, (localice las palabras que comienzan con cierto sonido, dibuje los cuadros/imagenes de las palabras que comienzan con un sonido específico) al final tendran experiencias significativas con su vida academica tanto como personal.

6 Sonidos Inciales Now I’ll/we’ll begin by discussing the 1st component of Estrellita. WHAT Refer to chart Sonidos Iniciales: deconstructing chart Goes from picture to sound – known to unknow (when students start with words they know, they can connect it to a sound) Reinforcing meaning of picture and letter ie. iman, nandu Lower case letters are emphasized because these are the letters students will encounter most when they’re reading read chart vertically The wall chart is divided into segements, each containing a group of letters taught together, based on frequency of use (segments are color coded) Sound buddies Foreign letters: k, w (less significant and last on the chart)

7 Sonidos Inciales y Los Sentidos
Visual, auditory, kinesthetic: Estrellita incorporates a variety of modalities for learning in order to support different styles of learning. It emphasizes the visual, the auditory, and the kinesthetic Active participation, everyone stands up and chants with hand movements (Oso, oso, o, o, o) Emphasize importance of chanting and hand signals from beginning nandu for the tilde hoja for silent h Distribute Sonidos Iniciales Individual Student Chart to each parent Have parents and children chant the chart Teach chant with hand movements and have parents and children follow along Varitations to extend chant: ie. mano, mano, m, m, m y el nombre es “m”

8 Sonidos Inciales Now I’ll/we’ll begin by discussing the 1st component of Estrellita. 9 Sonidos Iniciales: Tarea
Hogar En clase The Benefits of Estrellita: It allows students to participate at their own rate. (Teachers respond to students at their point of need) Students know their own learning objective (developing independence). (Teachers create an individualized plan for each student. Allows teacher to monitor student progress Los Beneficios de Estrellita: Permite que los estudiantes participen a su propio nivel Los estudiantes saben su propio objetivo de aprendizaje (desarrollando la independencia) Permite que la maestra supervise el progreso del alumno

10 Mezclando Sonidos Iniciales Con Otros Sonidos
Sílabas Palabras Oraciónes Now shifting into another essential component of Estrellita: Blending which includes: silabas, palabras, y oraciones. We’re continuing with the systematic approach with lots of scaffolds & monitoring on a daily basis & gradual release of responsibility.

11 Mezclando Sonidos: la supervisión del progreso
Sílabas Palabras Oraciones Cuentos When: after learning all the initial sounds Why: A review of all the consonants occurs naturally as students learn the syllables. Blending process is much easier to master when the syllable changes are isolated to the initial position (ma, pa, sa, etc) rather than the final position (ma, me, mi, etc.) Only been required to discriminate initial sounds. How: reference teacher directions in manual Pre-Test: if have been chanting sílabas con “a”, randomly point to six syllables if successful, then move into Individual Testing of all the sílabas con “a” using lime green sílabas con “a” cards (needs to be 100%). Continue the same process with silaba con e, i, o, u Explain Blending Progress Monitoring manila envelope, individualized progress chart, las sílabas, etc. Do not formally teach letter names until students have finished the blending con “a-e

12 Uso de la Escritura Writing application means taking sound to print
There many aspects of writing addressed ie. tracing & printing lowercase letters, spelling dictation, uppercase/letternames Key points: Always allow students to have a copy of the Sonidos Iniciales student chart at their side while they are doing dictation or any other kind of writing
