Talk with your child– about strengths, learning interests and challenges– get to know your child ACTIVITY: Have parents do a graphic organizer with their child at the center, and student learning interests and challenges within the home or school as a web. Refer participants to IEP and You p (from The IEP Process Presentation) for a review of terminology.

Role play activity: Participating at an IEP Before activity: ideally, put participants in groups of three – paying attention to language needs.Ask if there are any comments or questions participants would like to raise based on their small group. However organize this activity taking into account number of participants and language needs. Participants reflect/ think about a specific child for 3 min.: (Use previous graphic organizer that was developed about own child.) May use form to write a strength, a weakness and a concern to be raised in the next IEP meeting. Each participant takes a turn at being the Parent, the IEP team member, the Observer. The Parent gives information; the IEP Team member listens and can ask questions; the Observer reflects on what is occurring. Facilitator indicate when its time to rotate: 3 minute intervals. If group is very large, individuals can reflect/write – then share with the whole group. Large group discussion: ask if there are observations, comments or questions about the the group work. Remind participants that they should prepare for an IEP meeting with a supportive person who knows the child. They may invite a support person to the IEP meeting as well.
