2 El pretérito So far you have learned to use verbs in the present tense. In this chapter you will learn about the regular preterite, one of two simple past tenses in Spanish. Later, you will be introduced to the imperfect, which is also used to refer to events in the past. The preterit tense is used to express: An action that is terminated or completed at a given point in the past An action or state that occupies a limited period of time An action with a specific and indicated beginning or ending It is often compared to the “ed” form of the verb in English.

Ellos Ellas Ustedes (Uds.) é aste ó amos asteis aron Similarly to the present tense, the preterite is conjugated by dropping the ar, er, or ir from a verb and adding the preterite endings. *****There are NO boot verbs in the preterite*****

Notice the accent in the yo and él, ella, usted forms of the preterite. You MUST memorize the accents mark. What is the difference? Tomo vs. tomó tomar = tom What is the difference? 6 The conjugation of regular -ar verbs Tomé un avión a Costa Rica el año pasado. I took a plane to Costa Rica last year. Elena nadó en las aguas termales. Elena swam in the hot springs. Los pasajeros miraron la pantalla de salidas ayer. The passengers looked at the departure screen yesterday.

7 The conjugation of regular -ar verbs Tomamos el autobús al centro todos los días. We take the bus downtown every day. Tomamos el autobús a la escuela ayer. We took the bus to school yesterday. The first-person plural, or nosotros, form of -ar verbs is the same in the preterit as in the present tense. This does not normally cause confusion since context usually clarifies the meaning.
