2  Can be used with the verb estar to express an action that is in progress ◦ Juan y yo no podemos salir porque estamos estudiando  Juan and I cannot go out because we are studying  Gerund is also used, as it is in English, without an auxiliary verb ◦ Los padres, tratando de mantenersetranquilos, escucharon la descripción del accidente.  The parents, while trying to stay calm, listened to the description of the accident. ◦ Dandóle la mano al público, el polític o creía que aumentaba su apoyo  By shaking hands with the audience, the politician felt that his support was increasing.

3  The infinitive, not the gerund, is used as a noun ◦ Hacer ejercicio es bueno para la salud.  Exercising is good for your health. ◦ Escuchar es un arte que necesitamos desarrollar  Listening is an art we need to develop. ◦ Escribir cartas no es tan popular como telefonear  Writing letters is not as popular as calling on the phone.

4  The infinitive, not the gerund, is used after prepositions ◦ Salieron sin decir adiós  They left without saying good-bye ◦ Después de oír el precio, decidieron no comprarlo  After hearing the price, they decided not to buy it ◦ No sabíamos la dirección antes de marcharnos  We didn’t know the address before leaving

5  Al (a + el, meaning upon) functions as a preposition, therefore it must be followed by the infinitive ◦ Al salir, vi a Dolores  Upon leaving, I saw Dolores
