Apuntes el 11 de marzo Los pronombres de complemento directo (Direct Object Pronouns) Direct object pronouns replace direct object nouns. A direct object is the noun that receives the direct “force” of the verb. Look at the following sentence: I bought a new computer. The thing that was bought, a new computer, is the direct object of the verb bought. The subject of the sentence is I.

We use direct object pronouns to avoid having to repeat nouns. Observe how we can avoid repeating the noun a new computer in the following dialogue: Me: I bought a new computer. You: Great! Where did you buy it? Me: I bought it at Costco. We’re able to use the direct object pronoun it in order to avoid having to repeat the noun.

Spanish also uses direct object pronouns. The ones that you need to know for now are: lo = him, it (masculine noun) la = her, it (feminine noun) los = them (masculine nouns) las = them (feminine nouns)

We can recreate the dialogue about the computer in Spanish. Yo: Compré una nueva computadora. Tú: ¡Qué bueno! ¿Dónde la compraste? Yo: La compré en Costco.

Here are some additional examples: Compré un vestido. Lo compré en Sears. Compré una chaqueta. La compré en Fred Meyer. Compré unos zapatos. Los compré en Nordstrom. Compré unas camisas. Las compré en JC Penney. You notice that the direct object pronoun comes before the verb, which is different from English.
