Show Slide On average, Americans spend 90% of their time indoors, where pollutant levels may be two to five times higher, and occasionally more than 100 times higher, than outdoor levels (U.S. EPA: The Total Exposure Assessment Methodology (TEAM) Study. EPA 600/S6-87/002. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Therefore, quality of indoor air has become an increasing concern. Strategies to improve indoor environmental quality have the potential to reduce liability for building owners, increase resale value and increase building occupant health. Personnel costs are a significant percentage of operating costs – much greater than energy or maintenance costs – thus, actions that affect employee attendance and productivity are significant to the bottom line. Prevention of air quality problems is generally much less expensive than productivity losses or mitigation when problems occur. Building operators and owners should aim to minimize the introduction of air pollutants and manage and mitigate contaminants that are introduced to provide a comfortable and simulating environment for building occupants.
