Necesitan saber (to know): ¿Cuáles son los “pronombres del sujeto”? ¿Cuáles son las terminaciones para los verbos –AR? ¿Cuáles son las terminaciones para los verbos –ER? ¿Cuáles son las terminaciones para los verbos –IR? ¿Cómo se “conjugan los verbos” (conjugate)? ¿Cómo se traducen las oraciones de inglés a español usando verbos conjugados?

The key to translating English to Spanish is that: First you find the verb and who is doing the action. Next conjugate the verb for the corresponding subject pronoun. English uses lots of helping verbs that aren’t needed in Spanish. That is why all the translations that follow are covered by BAILO I dance. I do dance. Do I dance? I am dancing. I dance tomorrow. Should I dance? I will dance tomorrow.

8 What does “conjugation” mean?

An infinitive is a verb that is NOT conjugated. In Spanish, the infinitive ends in AR, ER, or IR. In English, the infinitive starts with “TO.” Example: TO speak = hablAR TO eat = comER TO live = vivIR When you conjugate a verb, you change the infinitive so that you know who is doing the action. EX: I eat = comO YOU eat = comES HE/SHE eats = comE HOW do you conjugate regular verbs? First step… First you must take off the AR, ER, or IR from the infinitive. Drop the AR ending: Hablar  Habl- Drop the ER ending: Comer  Com- Drop the IR ending: Vivir  Viv-

9 Second step… Next you must attach the ending that corresponds to who is doing the action. What if you want to use someone’s name instead of the pronouns? You can substitute a name or thing for the pronouns as follows: Juan = He = Él  Juan habla español. Alicia = She = Ella  Alicia habla español. La clase = It feminine  La clase habla español. Juan y yo = We = Nosotros  Juan y yo hablamos español. Alicia y yo (fem) =We = Nosotras  Alicia y yo hablamos español.* Juan y Pepe = They = Ellos  Juan y Pepe hablan español. Alicia y Mari = They = Ellas  Alicia y Mari hablan español.* Los estudiantes = They = Ellos  Los estudiantes hablan español. NOTE: Verbs DO NOT change for gender. EL/ELLA conjugate the same. Juan y tú = Uds. or Vosotros in Spain Juan y Ud.= Uds. everywhere

11 HOW do you form questions?
Questions can be formed in several ways. Start with a Question word followed by the verb and subject: Where does Juan live? = ¿Dónde vive Juan? 2. Start with the verb + the subject: Do you live in Covina? = ¿Vives (tú) en Covina (tú)? 3. Add a tag phrase to a statement: Tú vives en Covina, ¿verdad? =true?; ¿sí?=right? ¿no?=don’t you?
