6 HOW DOES understanding the
El 27 de octubre La CULTURA #3: HOW DOES understanding the products, practices and perspectives of another culture help us? People tend to be fearful of what they don’t understand. This can lead to speculative condemnatory thinking, such as associating skulls with evil or the devil. When we take the time to comprehend what people believe and how those beliefs manifest themselves in the way they behave (customs & traditions) and the products they create, we begin to appreciate their personal histories as well as our own. This open-mindedness can lead to tolerance and respect for ideas different from our own. Relationships based on respect for ideas different from our own can lead to peace!

9 El Día De Los Muertos Project (Venn Diagram)
To get full credit… You MUST have at least 20 important facts (TOTAL for all 3 categories) You MUST include historical information that you learned from the handouts and the video. Minimum of 5 historical facts about the purpose, customs, and origin of these holidays. Do NOT separate 1 category into several characteristics. For example: Items used to decorate the altar are all part of one category. Don’t count each item separately for the “20 minimum” requirement. The different foods are all part of one category. Don’t count each food separately. Activities like trick or treating & carving pumpkins are also part of one category. Things like they are both holidays and many people celebrate these holidays don’t count because they are too obvious and the info doesn’t come from the movie or texts you read. It MUST be colored and decorated with symbols for each holiday. GRADING: Next slide

REQUIREMENTS FOR EXTRA CREDIT: 1. Attend the event and TAKE A PICTURE of yourself at the event. 2. Ask people about their altars. TYPE or Print CLEARLY about your experience (include what you learned/found out/felt). DUE by this FRIDAY, Nov 3rd) IF YOU CAN’T MAKE IT TO A DíA DE LOS MUERTOS EVENT, You can print out the instructions on how to make an altar for this day. Make your own altar to honor a family member or famous person who has passed away. Take pictures with your altar and type a minimum of ½ page double spaced that explains your experience as well as what you placed on the altar and why. Bring the explanation, picture and instructions in for extra credit.

Where does the main celebration take place and what is done to prepare for it? It is actually 2 days; what is celebrated on each day? Are the costumes the same or different from the ones used in the USA on Halloween? How? 10. Do you agree with the final message? We are not here for a long time; we are here for a good time. Why or why not?
